About Arthur

I am a retired public school mathematics teacher. I taught mathematics for 33 years at the junior high/middle school level. I taught math 7, math 8, pre-algebra, and algebra I. I also substituted for 6 years at the school that I retired from and also worked for 2 years for NorthShoreClubZ Tutoring Agency. I have a BS in Math from UMASS Amherst and an MS in Math from Salem State University. I live in Saugus and taught in the Beverly Public School System. I am familiar with differentiated instruction, the Mass State Frameworks, and students' IEPs. I am very patient and I am able to explain concepts so that you will understand them. I have taught many, many students over the last 40 years and realize that each student has his or her own learning style. I am a retired public school mathematics teacher. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

ACT math involves pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, geometry and trigonometry. I have passed all the tests in these subjects and have been approved in each of them. I have a BS and an MS both in mathematics. I have used many topics from all of these subjects while getting my Bachelor's Degree and my Master's Degree. Many of the concepts I taught while I was a teacher.

Algebra 1

I taught mathematics in the Beverly School System for 33 years. I taught Algebra I for many years and also taught Algebra I in summer school. I have a BS and an MS both in mathematics.

Algebra 2

I taught mathematics in the Beverly School System for 33 years. I taught Algebra I for many years. I have a BS and an MS both in mathematics which qualifies me to teach any high school math course.

Elementary Math

I taught mathematics for 33 years in the Beverly Public School System. I taught in the middle school and have a lot of experience with students in this age level. I also substituted for seven years at Briscoe Middle School and substituted many times in the sixth grade. I feel my experience qualifies me to tutor elementary students. I am familiar with differentiated instruction and student IEPs.

GED

While getting my BS at UMASS Amherst, I took many English, history, science, psychology, language, and other courses such as art and music. I feel that I have a very varied education as well as a concentration in mathematics. I am also computer literate. Also, when I graduated from UMASS I was certified not only in math but also in science. However, I taught only math for my entire career.

Geometry

I taught mathematics in the Beverly Public Schools for 33 years. I have a BS and an MS both in mathematics. I feel that my experience and my math degrees qualify me to teach any math course in high school.

Prealgebra

I taught mathematics in the Beverly Public School System.. I taught at Briscoe Middle School, grades 7 and 8. I taught Algebra I, Pre-Algebra, Math 7 and Math 8 for many years.

Precalculus

I am qualified to tutor Precalculus because I have studied all the courses that precede calculus: algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. In college I took Calculus I, II, III,and IV.

I have taken at least 30 math courses beyond calculus on the undergraduate level and the graduate level. I have a BS and an MS both in mathematics and have 30 credits beyond my Master's Degree.

PSAT

I have a BS in math and an MS in math and 30 credits beyond my MS. I took between 25 and 30 math courses between my BS and my MS and beyond. In taking these courses, algebra, geometry, analytical geometry, trigonometry, and calculus was used in the study of most, if not all, of these courses. Several concepts of one or more of these high school courses were used in each college course. I feel confident in tutoring a student in the PSAT test.

Trigonometry

I feel qualified to tutor in trigonometry because I have a BS and an MS both in mathematics. I used trigonometry in many, many math courses that I took for my Bachelor's Degree and my Master's Degree. When you study upper level college courses in mathematics, both on the undergraduate and the graduate level, you use higher order thinking. When you look back at high school courses, the concepts appear to become easier and easier. Even if, for example, you don't remember an identity in trigonometry, you have the thinking capacity to find it in the book, understand it, and be able to explain it to someone.

Patient Tutor

Arthur was great working with my student. He has some learning delays and is behind for his grade, but his biggest problem is confidence. Arthur quickly identified that and worked with him in a way that actually helped him. I could hear Arthur explain a concept several times, in several different ways, until my student understood. We met with another tutor that week and at the end my kid said,
