About Colette

Looking for someone to work with your student who is flexible in both scheduling and teaching style? You've found the right person! I enjoy working with students of all ages and learning styles, in many different subject areas. I am very creative in my teaching methods, as I teach to the individual student, reaching to where he/she is coming from. I believe all students have their own unique learning styles, and finding out a student's learning style then teaching to that style is a key to each student's success.

I have experience working with students of varied abilities, including those with special needs, particularly ADD, ADHD, and autism. There are many interventions that I teach to assist my students in their success. In addition, I have many years of personal experience in these areas, as I have a child of my own with autism, another child with ADD, and a niece with down syndrome.

I have a great deal of training and experience in the field of social work and advocacy, which helps a lot in my work with all students. Learning is much more than simply memorizing what is read from a book or written in a notebook. Learning involves all one's senses and many different experiences affecting the student.

I feel that combining all my many different work and training experiences - social work, advocacy, teaching, childcare - as well as my own life experiences, allows me to offer a very unique and creative teaching and learning experience to my students. I am available flexible hours days, evenings and weekends. I look forward to working with your student, and making a difference in his/her life! Please get in touch with me today!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I feel quite qualified to tutor students with a diagnosis of Autism because I have experience both personally and professionally with students in this population. I have provided support in the classroom setting, as well as have provided tutoring services to students on the Autism Spectrum. I also have experience conducting ABA Programs. My personal experience includes having a son who is diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, who is now 12 years old! I have been very closely involved in all my son's therapies and education. In addition, I am an Educational Advocate, securing services for many children on the Autism Spectrum, including my niece!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor's Degree, and I have been approved for the subjects of "Elementary Math", "Elementary Science", "English", "Grammar", and "Reading". I have many years of experience both as a tutor and as a volunteer, working with the Elementary age group in a teaching role. My experience has been in a variety of subjects, and with a variety of ages. I also have experience working with students of all different abilities, including gifted as well as disabled students.
Thank you,
Colette

Special Needs

I feel I am qualified to tutor students with Special Needs. My experience includes both personal and professional. I have a son with Autism who is now 10 years old. I have spent many years learning about Autism and working with my son. I have learned and used Applied Behavioral Analysis Therapy.
I have another son with ADHD Inattentive Type. I have also spent many years working with him. I have learned and utilized many methods and interventions that work for living and learning with ADHD.
In addition, I have a niece with Down Syndrome, whom have also worked with and learned a great deal from. I have used ABA Therapy to work with her; and I have worked as her Advocate securing her services with the School System.
Professionally, I have several years of experience working as an Educational Advocate, securing services with School Districts for children with all types of special needs. Additionally, I have worked several years as a tutor educating children with a variety of special needs.
In terms of Education, I have a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, as well as my professional training in Educational Advocacy.
Through my education and experience, I have developed many creative and unique methods for engaging and educating my students. This individualized approach has shown to be quite successful!

Study Skills

I am qualified to tutor in the area of study skills because of both my education and my experience in this area. I am a college graduate; therefore, I was trained in study skills methods for years in both high school and college. I was always very organized and efficient as a student myself. This included keeping binders and notebooks in chronological order, tracking assignments in a calendar and breaking down projects into smaller goals, as well as using various test preparation methods to succeed on assessments. I have experience working with students of all ages and abilities on organizational skills, as well as on various methods to prepare for test-taking. Test preparation methods include some very creative, engaging activities using the material, so as to help the learner internalize the material. Study Skills are extremely important to teach from an early age and ongoing as the student develops in his/her learning.
