About Demian

Bio

Hi. My name is Demian, I'm from eastern Massachusetts and I'm an ESL teacher of roughly 12 years experience between schools in the Czech Republic and South Korea. I've taught all ages and many class sizes from one on one to as many as twenty students. I have also taught multiple aspects of the English language: reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension - I have even taught English literature (my university major) to some of my more advanced students. I have also taught some of the TOEFL exam. I am a veritable expert in English grammar and vocabulary.

In terms of my approach to tutoring, I like to try and engage the individual on as many levels as possible; I like to mix it up with conversation, grammar, vocabulary, reading, etc. I like to teach a lot of grammar as a good grasp of mechanics is a big part of establishing a base in learning any language -I think Murphy's Grammar in Use is the best text for grammar studies and I use it as much as possible. But I also like to emphasize conversation, even if a student is basic. I think it should be at least a third of each lesson as the ability to converse is a student's ultimate goal in studying a foreign language.

I have never before been a tutor in the states, but with all my overseas teaching experience I am sure that I will make an exceptional one. I have references from my overseas employers if anyone would like to see those.

I am also an exceptional writer and am interested in helping anyone, native speaker or non-native speaker alike, with help in this area as well, be it something creative, an essay, a business letter, etc.

Otherwise, I am interested in music (rock and jazz), travel, film, literature, history, sports (American football, basketball and MMA), and computers (specifically web development, design, and various computer languages) I have, in fact just spent a whole year studying web design. But I'm still a student, and I thought that while I continue my studies I should at least get some part-time work employing my English teaching skills. After years of honing them, they truly are skills that I hope to retain for the rest of my life.

Thanks and hope to hear from people.

Sincerely,

Demian

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL for the better part of 12 years in both the Czech Republic and South Korea, for several different schools as well as many different ages and class sizes. Additionally, I have taught both general and business English and have some experience with the TOEFL and Cambridge tests. I can provide recommendations from several of my old schools to anyone interested. For a good overview of my knowledge as an EFL instructor I encourage people to see my website, which includes essays about different approaches to ESL teaching as well as essays on the nature of English grammar and confusing vocabulary. Between my experience abroad as a teacher and my English literature degree I have a great understanding of my language and how to teach it and look forward to sharing it with future students.
Grammar,

Grammar

I have taught grammar many years and quite enjoy it. The mechanics of any language are fascinating, and English is no exception. Murphy's Grammar in Use has been a great guide for me, both as a teacher and a student. I particularly love teaching the tense system as English has an extensive one, but I also have a great deal of experience with modal verbs, conditionals, active and passive English, sentence structure and more.
