Hello! My name is Jim P. and I am available to tutor you in what I know best, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Flash animation. My job is to get you up and running on the latest software, targeting what you want to get accomplished, and leave you with the confidence that you understand the tools and techniques to go further.
Presently I am employed with Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational High School as a Design & Visual Communications instructor. Along with my colleagues, I teach Graphic Design, Animation, Web Design, Digital Photography, and Video. My background includes Graphic & Web Design, Cartoon Clip Art (200 vector images per month for 5 years), a running Comic Strip (Published in Norway), Editorial & Story Illustration for several New England newspapers (won the NEPA Awards 3 years in a row), T-shirt and Embroidery Design, Storyboards for local film companies, and 8 years of teaching. I am well versed in the Adobe Master Suite Collection CS6, and have been Adobe Certified in Rich Media and Photoshop.
I really work well on a one-on-one basis and try to have fun while doing so. I have tons of shortcuts and techniques that will make sense to you and do my best to make the complicated look easy. Most of the time, the first look at any software can be intimidating. My job will be to make the tools and techniques easy to understand and to get you on your way. Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching InDesign for the past 8 years to Vocational High School Students in Massachusetts. Presently I'm working with the Adobe Mastersuite Collection CS6. I cover the following items: document set-up including custom layouts & book prep, facing pages, setting margins, bleeds, and columns & gutters. We'll also work on the various methods and techniques for importing images and text, text wrap, threading text, creating and applying master pages, file management, page numbering, printing booklet function, applying effects to elements, character and paragraph styles, and packaging. I can also help in creating interactive PDF's that employ animation and video display. By the time you read this, I'll have gained further knowledge in designing and exporting InDesign documents for iPads and Mobile Devices
I am first and foremost a cartoonist and illustrator that love to work with Adobe products. I have been drawing professionally for the past 40 years, starting when I sold my first cartoon to a local vendor when I was 15 years old. Since then I have produced Editorial and Story Illustrations for various newspapers in Central New England, winning the NEPA Awards and Mass Press Awards for my work. I had a cartoon strip feature on the Comic Edge (a Chicago Tribune web site) and had a cartoon strip published in Norway for a few months.
I've worked in print shops, sign companies, advertising firms, and silkscreen & embroidery companies. I started my own company, Venture Graphix, back in 1989 and have since provided custom caricatures, graphic design, custom illustrations, web site design, and animation.
I started out in 1989 with a Mac Plus that I purchased for $1300 and an Apple Postscript Printer and have been a big advocate of Mac computers ever since. I once owned a Centris 610 back in the day, thinking I had it made with a whopping 230 mb of space. Time marches on and today I work with an iMac (at home and at work) and a brand new Mac Book. All are loaded with the Snow Leopard operating system, Adobe Mastersuite CS6, Microsoft Office 2008, and Final Cut Pro.
I am familiar with some of the basic Mac techniques, such as cleaning the hard drive, applying fonts, force quitting applications, establishing email and personal accounts, etc. I understand a lot of the keyboard shortcuts and can set-up peripherals, downloading and applying drivers and plug-ins.
