Bio

My teaching and tutoring experience is extensive. First, I taught German in Massachusetts public schools for 18 years. During that time I also taught Adult Ed classes to engineers, which led to a position with a large multinational company teaching German to some of their employees.

My teaching and tutoring experience is extensive. First, I taught German in Massachusetts public schools for 18 years. During that time I also taught Adult Ed classes to engineers, which led to a position with a large multinational company teaching German to some of their employees.

At this point I left public education and began a career as a German Language and Culture Consultant. Additionally, I began teaching English as a Second Language to the multinational employees (executives, scientists, engineers, spouses too) of the German owned company. I have worked with people from Germany, Poland, China, Japan, India, Vietnam, Colombia, Russia and the Ukraine.

During that time, I occasionally taught German courses at Gordon College on the North Shore of Boston. Meanwhile, I also wrote a handbook for Americans working with Germans or in Germany, and one for the Europeans who were delegated to working in the American subsidiary. This lead to developing Cross Cultural Communication seminars for the company.

From 2010 to 2011 I taught ESL group classes with Embassy CES at Merrimack College in Andover, MA. Currently, I offer English tutoring to adult individuals working for pharmaceutical an high tech companies and am an adjunct instructor in basic ESL courses for adults preparing to enter Northern Essex Community College. Occasionally I teach a Toefl course to international students seeking entrance to American colleges and universities.

I hold a Bachelor's in Foreign Language from Gordon College, a Master's in German Language and Literature from Tufts University, and have completed 6 total immersion seminars at the Goethe Institute in various locations in Germany.

I was awarded a full scholarship from Tufts for my graduate study and in 1994 received the Massachusetts German Educator of the Year award from the American Association of Teachers of German.

My teaching style varies according to the student or group to which I am responsible. I incorporate all four skills in language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Younger people can more easily learn languages and so different approaches can be taken with younger people than with adult learners. In all cases, the goal is to give the student what they need practically and functionally, with a good dose of humor.

Notice: I do not teach children under age 17. My experience is entirely with young adults and older.

ESL/ESOL

My experience teaching ESL is with multinational adults at a community college, in community programs and in a business setting. I have also worked with individuals and spouses of expatriates who work in the US. I have taught small group classes of 12-15 people and done individual tutoring in homes. We have worked on grammar and sentence structure, conversation and pronunciation. Another important area of interest is English idioms; this is especially important in the US and something which is not included when one learns English in school in Europe or other parts of the world. I often use the topic of cultural differences as a stimulus to discussion.
German

German

Although considered one of the more difficult languages to learn, for English speakers, the vocabulary is remarkably similar. Forty percent of English words are Germanic in origin and there are many easily recognizable cognates. I build on this basis and make learning interesting and enjoyable.

Friendly, patient, knowledgeable

This second lesson continued like the first. We reviewed what we went over last week -- and what I practiced. Then Margaret introduced new material that overlapped with the previous week. I will practice what we went over this lesson. She helps me make the types of logical connections I need between German and English, and within German.

Very knowledgeable and pleasant

We went over some topics in order to access my current level, discussed my goals, discussed points of interest. Margaret will conduct lessons to meet my needs, tailoring material and exercises specifically for my level. Looking forward to working with her in the future!
