Bio

I love teaching. I taught in classrooms in New York City and outside Boston for a decade and have been a private tutor for 9 years. I specialize in helping those kids who say:

- "I don't know what to write about!"
- "I can't write; let's get this over with."
- "I have no idea what the teacher wants."
- "I lost the assignment."
- "The essay is due next Monday, so I have no homework!"
- "Ugh, I hate history essays - so boring!"

My belief, honed in my 10 years in the classroom, is that a few people are truly gifted in language arts, and the rest of us learn to write by taking books, paragraphs, and sentences apart and seeing what makes them tick. I know that all kids can learn to not just get good grades and be prepared for tests - and my students do both - but also to understand exactly *how* a strong piece of writing comes together. Some even learn to love it!

In addition, many students get tripped up by executive functioning issues. The teacher reads out an assignment as kids are leaving class, and some kids are already thinking about the next class and then they have no idea what to do at night. Many teachers give out thorough and helpful written assignments, but understanding exactly how to use those tools is a skill I teach my students. We develop questions for the teacher early in the process, get clarifications, build schedules, and get the right sources read and the right pieces written *early*. Why? Because revision is just as important as drafting, and no one should be handing in a first draft. When kids learn this process, writing becomes less of a mystery and much more of a new way to express themselves.

So send me your most reluctant readers and writers! I know there is a successful, happy student in there fighting hard to get out.
