I am a writer and teacher with twenty years of experience teaching writing to a wide range of populations, including ESL, special education, middle school, high school, university, law school and adult continuing education. I also coach teachers in teaching writing across the disciplines; I run college essay writing workshops; I work as an editor. I have degrees from Kenyon College and the Iowa Writers Workshop. I am a former Radcliffe Institute fellow and have published two books of my own to national acclaim.
I am effective at assessing the individual writer and tailoring lessons to meet differing needs. I focus on helping students develop their own writing process, which will serve them well beyond our tutoring sessions. Students don’t always share in my enthusiasm for the illimitable challenge presented by the writing and revision processes, but I am usually persuasive in my identification of a student’s writing strengths and weaknesses. In addition to pre-writing, drafting, and revision processes, I teach the discipline of line by line editing–-honing in on, clarifying, and thoroughly developing sentences, paragraphs, and the larger statement. I am a writer and teacher with twenty years of experience teaching writing to a wide range of populations, including ESL, special education, middle school, high school, university, law school
I have a sliding fee scale, do not discriminate, and am eager to work with each student.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
