A.A. Liberal Arts
I began teaching children while I was still at the baby-sitting age. It began by teaching Sunday School to ages four and five for a few years. Then, I tutoring elementary school students through my high school. Private tutoring different subjects for various ages and levels of education followed. In the mid-eighties I taught Fundamental Arithmetic for a Jr. College's evening division. Since then I worked for Education Station, a company that was contracted by the Boston Public Schools. I taught after-school hours in a classroom setting, for at risk elementary school students.
For me, it's a wonderful feeling when I see a child's face light up when he/she finally understand a concept. I find that patience and kindness is key. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Education Station employed me as a teacher for two years. I was placed at the Marshall Elementary School in Dorchester and the Aggazziz Middle School in Jamaica Plain, MA. I taught K-2, first grade and subbed middle school. The subjects instructed were Reading, English and Mathematics.
I have an A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts from Roxbury Community College in Boston, MA. And there, I taught Fundamental Arithmetic in the Evening Division.
While I taught for Education Station I used phonics to teach the K-2nd graders to read. I used different teaching tools to reinforce the rules for phonics. Flashcards, blocks, workbooks and games are some of the teaching aids that are and have been effective for beginning readers.
I learned to read using Phonics. It is the only way I have ever taught children or adults to read.
As a high school student at Windsor Mt School in Lenox, I tutored inner-city children from a Pittsfield elementary school.
I have an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts, and graduated with High Honors. During my matriculation, I instructed Fundamental Arithmetic as a Teaching Assistant. I then attended BU and Suffolk Universities when I majored in Secondary Ed. My concentration was Journalism.
The reason I qualify as a Spelling tutor is that I also taught Spelling as part of being a Reading teacher with Education Station. I taught Reading while in their employ and also Math in Elementary and Middle Schools.
