About Matthew

I have a M.Ed. in ESL (1991) and a B.A. with honors in English Literature (1989) from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I've taught English to adult and high school English learners in Asia and the US, and have been tutoring privately for five years. I have volunteered at a local library tutoring ESL for several years. I enjoy working on pronunciation, writing, grammar, and vocabulary.

My personal hobbies are playing cornet, working out and studying languages, including French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and Greek.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I received my Bachelor of Arts cum laude in English from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a 3.4 GPA. I have a clear grasp of English grammar and structure because I have studied several foreign languages: French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, and classical Greek. I am a careful, patient tutor.

ESL/ESOL

The English language and foreign languages have always interested me. I have studied a little French, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, ancient Greek and Hebrew. This has given me a better view of what English learners need to know, and how to explain English to them more clearly. I finished my Master's program in ESL with a 3.9 GPA.

Grammar

I received my Bachelor of Arts cum laude in English from the University of Massachusetts, with a 3.4 GPA and a score of 740 on the verbal portion of the SAT. I have studied several foreign languages, among them French, Russian, classical Greek, and Spanish. These studies have reinforced and enriched my grasp of English structure and grammar.

SAT Reading

The ability to analyze written expository material grammatically and in terms of content has always seemed to be a talent I have. I was consistently on the high honor and honor rolls for most of my terms as a middle and high school student, and received a score of 740 on the verbal portion of the SAT. While I was an English major, several professors in the English department complemented the high quality of my analytical skills in literature. While I was a graduate student in ESL, my academic advisor complemented the quality of my analysis in classroom and written research in 2nd language acquisition.

Spelling

Long before there were computerized spell-checkers and grammar-checkers, I was excelling at spelling, grammar, and proofing my own writing and language learning in English (and at times in French, Russian, or Japanese). I am fortunate to have a talent for language and language-related skills and this extends to the minutiae of grammar, syntax, spelling and spelling shifts (from nominal to adjectival forms, for example), punctuation, and finally to proofreading when the composition process is (seemingly) finished.
