About Matthew

I am a patient and thoughtful English language tutor who enjoys making sure that English language learners truly understand their learning materials.

I have a M.Ed. in ESL (1991) and a B.A. with honors in English Literature (1989) from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. I've taught English to adult and high school English learners in Asia and the US, and have been tutoring privately for six years. I have volunteered at a local library tutoring ESL for several years. I enjoy working on pronunciation, writing, grammar, and vocabulary.

I don't have a set curriculum as I differ my tutoring for each student. Language takes a long time to learn -- it doesn't happen overnight. I usually ask the tutee what his/her preferred method is, such as reading newspaper articles or listening to the radio or television -- those are just examples -- and try to steer the tutee toward choosing an ESL textbook they might like. I think it's important for the tutee to choose a textbook and articles, recordings, etc., to work on, rather than for me to choose them, as I would rather have the tutee working with materials they are motivated to work on and that they have chosen themselves from their own interests.

In a nutshell, there have to be some concrete materials for the tutee to focus on in order to make steady progress, and to develop some sense of accomplishment once a given material is completed and moved on from. I am able to offer my knowledge of English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to the tutee at each juncture to help them to understand the material and to benefit from it.

If you have more specific questions, perhaps those can be answered once you have chosen some concrete, specific materials that you would like to work on, let me know how you envision working on them, and let me inform you how I see myself helping you to work on and benefit from those materials.

My personal hobbies are playing cornet, working out and studying languages, including French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and Greek.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I received my Bachelor of Arts cum laude in English from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a 3.4 GPA. I have a clear grasp of English grammar and structure because I have studied several foreign languages: French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, and classical Greek. I am a careful, patient tutor.

ESL/ESOL

The English language and foreign languages have always interested me. I have studied a little French, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, ancient Greek and Hebrew. This has given me a better view of what English learners need to know, and how to explain English to them more clearly. I finished my Master's program in ESL with a 3.9 GPA.

Grammar

I received my Bachelor of Arts cum laude in English from the University of Massachusetts, with a 3.4 GPA and a score of 740 on the verbal portion of the SAT. I have studied several foreign languages, among them French, Russian, classical Greek, and Spanish. These studies have reinforced and enriched my grasp of English structure and grammar.

Reading

I have extensive reading experience in foreign languages and English and a M.Ed. in ELL. My undergraduate degree is in English Literature.

SAT Reading

The ability to analyze written expository material grammatically and in terms of content has always seemed to be a talent I have. I was consistently on the high honor and honor rolls for most of my terms as a middle and high school student, and received a score of 740 on the verbal portion of the SAT. While I was an English major, several professors in the English department complemented the high quality of my analytical skills in literature. While I was a graduate student in ESL, my academic advisor complemented the quality of my analysis in classroom and written research in 2nd language acquisition.

SAT Writing

I scored well on my SATs and ACH tests.

Spelling

Long before there were computerized spell-checkers and grammar-checkers, I was excelling at spelling, grammar, and proofing my own writing and language learning in English (and at times in French, Russian, or Japanese). I am fortunate to have a talent for language and language-related skills and this extends to the minutiae of grammar, syntax, spelling and spelling shifts (from nominal to adjectival forms, for example), punctuation, and finally to proofreading when the composition process is (seemingly) finished.

Vocabulary

English Lit was my undergrad major. Education was my grad degree.
