I am an experienced, licensed classroom teacher and tutor. My primary area of expertise is English Language Arts, specifically writing and reading. I focus on developing skills that are applicable beyond my particular class. For example, when working on a assigned reading, I help students to understand not only that text but also how to read other texts of that kind. I can't always be with my students to help them to understand the details of a given text, but I can teach students how to read actively so that they can make sense of any text on their own.
I am a graduate of the University of Connecticut (BA in English, 3.6 GPA) and the University of Massachusetts (MEd in Secondary Education, 3.97 GPA.)

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
