About Gillian

Hello! My name is Gillian and I am a passionate learner and educator of music, history and many other subjects. I earned my Bachelor’s in Vocal Performance from Westminster Choir College and graduated summa cum laude. I then attended the University of St Andrews where I earned my Master’s in Mediaeval Studies where I focused on music, paleography, philosophy and history. I am currently undertaking my second Master's at the University of Cambridge in the UK in Historical Musicology. I am an active mediaeval musicologist and singer of choral and operatic repertoire. I gave a paper this past summer at the Mediaeval and Renaissance Music conference in Brussels, and recently recorded an opera, Deus Ex Machina, with Beauport Classical Recordings.

Stemming from my personal Waldorf educational background, I deeply value kinesthetic learning and am able to empathize with students. I always meet the student at their level and am open and excited about coming up with new and unique solutions. I am interested in success in a positive and long-lasting framework.

I have tutored prealgebra, algebra and basic geometry at the middle/high school level. I have been successful in boosting comprehension by addressing root issues in order of operations, computation and created visual and kinesthetic solutions for problems that were at first, too theoretical.

I assisted many students at Westminster Choir College in the editing and writing of papers. I have a keen eye for syntax and constructing a cohesive argument. I have also worked as a research assistant at Northeastern University and I participated in the writing and editing of an undergraduate Marketing textbook. Following this experience I received private clients for the editing of Master's theses, including non-native English speakers. I am able to help students of all ages find their unique 'voice' and write accurately and effectively.

At Westminster Choir College, I tutored Music History, Voice, Theory, and English/Italian/German/French Diction. I also taught opera and general music at the Windhover Summer Camp to children 5-13 years old.
Music History is one of my main passions and I hope to pursue my PhD in Musicology some day soon! I excelled in all of my music history courses from Mediaeval through Contemporary Trends. I also have studied many kinds of world music (Caucus Georgia, Bosnia, Corsica, Brazil and South Africa) and have experience as a music ethnographer.

I aim to make my lessons interactive and engaging for students of all ages and backgrounds.
****Please note that the tutoring fee is $45/hr for academic tutoring and $60/hr for music lessons. Contact me to find out the exact fee and to see if we are a good fit!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music History

I am currently undertaking an MPhil in Music Studies at the University of Cambridge in the UK. My research falls under the umbrella of Historical Musicology and, to a degree, Ethnomusicology. Though my specialty is in Mediaeval Music, I am equipped to teach all history in the western cannon. I have been a guest lecturer at Salem State University and am a pre-concert lecturer at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. My lecture work varies from Mediaeval Chant, to Baroque Opera, to Wagner, to Brahms, to Schubert, to Crumb and includes reception history and phenomenology.

Social Studies

I excelled in all of my social studies related courses in my academic career. In High School I took both the AP US History and AP Modern European History courses and passed both exams. I have my Master's in Mediaeval Studies, an interdisciplinary course which addressed history, social sciences, anthropology, literary criticism, art history, philosophy, music and paleography.

Voice (Music)

I have a bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from Westminster Choir College where I graduated summa cum laude with baccalaureate honors. I have been teaching voice in my private studio for five years and I also worked at the Pleasant Street Music Studio. I sing professionally in several choirs and as a section leader/soloist. Details of my most recent lead Opera engagement, Deus Ex Machina, can be seen upon request.
