About Deborah

After several years teaching high school English at a homeschooling cooperative in Washington, I'm back in Massachusetts and ready to tutor! I've been tutoring on the side for a few years now, and I love getting the chance to really work with students to find their passion. A recent student of mine felt she was just "not a school person" and struggled with her reading comprehension and writing skills. With a little digging, though, I found that she was absolutely fascinated by government and civics, so I used her interest in those subjects to fuel her tutoring sessions. She's now started attending a prestigious local private school and would like to go to college for political theory. That's what I love about tutoring!

I have my Master's degree in creative writing and I attended a competitive liberal arts college where I majored in philosophy. My tutoring subjects cover most of the humanities, with specialization in high school English language and literature. I am also experienced in test prep and recently personally received a perfect score and near perfect score on the GRE's verbal and essay sections respectively.

While I specialize in working with teens and adults, I have worked with younger children as well and spent several years as a nanny, working with neurotypical and special needs children alike. I aim to tailor each tutoring course to the individual student, finding ways to make the material applicable to their life and interests. References available on request, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been a youth leader with my church for the past three and a half years, and a large part of my duties involved creating Bible studies and other printed materials to help students understand the Bible. We worked primarily with high school students, though sometimes middle school as well. I also was asked to speak several times and to give background history and context for others' sermons. In addition, I completed a course of study abroad with Jerusalem University College in Jerusalem doing Biblical archaeology and visiting historical sites.

English

I worked for two years as a high school English teacher at a private school in Washington state. I also have received my Master's degree in Creative Writing.

Film

I have completed work on my Master's degree in Creative Writing, my specialty being writing for film and television. Part of my program, therefore, was film literacy and criticism. My writings have also been published in six different academic books that specifically concern film and television. Also I completed a great deal of coursework on international film studies while at college.
