Having had much coursework and being very well-read, I am seeking to expand from my position tutoring all levels of English and the humanities at Berkshire Community College into some private business. A published writer and having formerly worked as an editor, I specialize in teaching the craft of writing clearly, concisely, and powerfully. However, my secondary strength is sharing my enthusiasm for literature with students, helping them to understand and appreciate the various literary forms and techniques and thus become deeper, more reflective persons. Of course, none of this is possible without grammar, which I am also able to instruct in systematic and meticulous fashion.
I am also a competent French speaker, having attended university in Québec, and understand Latin grammar well, and thus would certainly be able to teach elementary or intermediate courses in these subjects. A good understanding of history--from the times of the Greeks up to our present day - also leads me to offer my services in the instruction of history. I am also able to teach algebra and geometry, though I opt not to teach trigonometry, calculus, or the sciences.
I am certified at level one by the College Reading and Learning Association. References are available upon request.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Geometry is very visual, and my style of teaching here reflects that.
Grammar is foundational for any education in letters. My approach is to work through it systematically, with continual reference to literature and good form, as no one element of an English education can truly be taken alone.
Literature is truly my favorite subject to teach. I have undertaken extensive studies of English and American literature in all its forms, have served as assistant editor of a literary magazine, and write poetry and fiction.
In mathematical instruction, I emphasize word problems.
I've delivered numerous public addresses and have been on radio and television. I have a good working understanding of the rules of rhetoric. My homeschooled students are always obliged to deliver various presentations in addition to their essays. Of course, I am very happy to coach them through these.
I have much experience tutoring reading at Berkshire Community College.
I had SAT verbal scores in the 98th percentile.
I had SAT verbal scores in the 98th percentile.
I've worked with many college and test-preparation students to give them the skills needed to master their material and to show their proficiency. I do much work with my college students on such matters as SQ3R, Cornell note-taking, and time management. Indeed, I'd say that most of what I do as a tutor, regardless of what subject I'm teaching, deals with improving my students' study skills.
My instruction here focuses on the use of the dictionary and the thesaurus, as well as study methods for vocabulary which will serve the student well when later learning the terminology of any field of learning.
Through my work at Berkshire Community College, I have had the most experience tutoring college composition classes. My approach stresses logical organization of thought with a strong emphasis on clear and concise style.
