I am proud to say that I have been teaching for more than 20 years and have experience with multicultural and diverse students at both the middle and high school levels, with a particular emphasis on students who learn differently, appear to be unmotivated or have other learning challenges. My teaching certifications are in Math (Grades 5-12) as well as Special Education.
To better motivate my students, I created a challenging technique called "Mathematics in Motion". Students are able to personally challenge themselves and the teacher once they have mastered a specific concept. This seems to encourage them to learn math in an "out of school fun manner". Parents have commented that their children feel good about themselves when it comes to math, and are not as self-conscious. There is no "one size fits all" approach to teaching as each student is unique with his/her own strengths and challenges. Thus, my approaches are tailor made to fit each student's individual needs.
I would appreciate a 24 hour cancellation notice in order to serve other students. Likewise, if I'm unable to keep a set appointment, I would give the same the same courtesy. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from Bridgewater State University and a Massachusetts State Teaching License in Moderate Special Needs for Grades K-12 with 20 years of practical experience working with Special Needs students from Middle through High School ages.
During that time, I wrote countless IEP's, developed and implemented various, individualized classroom accommodations, collaborated with mainstream, regular education teachers to modify specific classroom, project-based and homework assignments. and served as consultant at large for various evening school programs for Adult Learners.
My students' backgrounds ranged across the spectrum of Special Needs and I believe that I have learned more from them than they have from me.
