About Jared

Hello! My name is Jared; I am a western Massachusetts native who currently resides in Quincy, MA and attends graduate school in Boston.

In 2012, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Clarks Summit University in Pennsylvania, where I majored in both English and Theology. Since then, I have served as a private teacher/tutor, a college admissions counselor, a NCAA track coach, a graduate administrative assistant, and a laboratory research assistant. I am currently finishing up a degree in Linguistics.

My strongest skills include teaching introductory and intermediate Latin, coaching distance running events (800m - 10,000m), teaching the English language, and editing written work. In the past, I have also tutored subjects such as Theology, French, Algebra, and History. I have considerable experience with European languages, namely: Latin (4 years), French (5 years), Spanish (3 years), German (2 years), and Koine Greek (2 years).

On a more personal note, I enjoy activities like watching NFL games, creating new languages, and dining at Indian/Thai restaurants. I also enjoy running absurd distances over adventurous terrain, crafting ornate Minecraft buildings (you can never be too old!), and keeping an eye on the stock market.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

My undergraduate major centered on Philosophy and Theology. I have taken the following applicable courses: Theology I - VI (Evangelical Protestant), Principles of Bible Study, Old Testament History, Old Testament Prophets, New Testament Survey, Romans, Koine Greek I - IV, Kings & Chronicles, and Prison Epistles. Moreover, I have hands-on Bible study experience from serving as a youth leader at Calvary Baptist Church in Pulaski, NY from 2010 to 2012.

College Counseling

I served for several years as an Admissions Counselor at a university in Pennsylvania. I regularly answered students' and parents' questions regarding how to approach college searches, how to approach collegiate academics, how to cut costs, and how to make applications more competitive. I am well acquainted with the entire Admissions process: I regularly made decisions to accept or deny prospective students.

I also have 5 years' worth of collegiate Athletics experience as a NCAA Cross Country and Track coach.

English

In college, I maintained a 4.0 GPA with regard to all of my English and Literature classes. I am currently pursuing a graduate degree in Linguistics. Some of the English courses that I have taken include: Advanced English Grammar & Rhetoric, Expository Writing, and British Literature.

Grammar

As an undergraduate learner, I maintained a 4.0 GPA in all of my English and writing classes; during my senior year, I took Advanced English Grammar and Linguistics. Currently, I am applying to graduate schools for Comparative Linguistics.

Latin

TEACHING: During the summer of 2016, I co-taught a high school Latin course at the University of Delaware; I also oversaw all after-hours tutoring sessions. Currently, I tutor several students on a private basis in the Boston area. In June 2017, I served as an assistant director at a classical language institute at Bridgewater State University.

ACADEMIC: To date, I have taken both undergraduate and graduate courses in Latin. Regarding textbooks, I know the Lingua Latina series, the Tres Columnae series, and the Cambridge Latin Course very well. As a part of my graduate coursework, I have composed several short stories in Latin and even one "Latin Reader" with extensive marginal notes for beginner and intermediate readers.

EXTRACURRICULAR: Since 2015, I have attended numerous Active Latin events, including days-long immersion events, where participants practice speaking out loud and talking about the things they love. In my opinion, it is hard to call a language "dead" when it is used even today by speakers here in America for entertainment, humor, self-expression, and intellectual/spiritual enrichment!

Proofreading

While working as the Supervisor of Support Services and Telecounseling Manager at a local, four-year college, I regularly proofread email templates, acceptance letters, and proposed marketing materials before final submissions.

I also have extensive academic experience with writing, grammar and rhetoric; in college, I maintained A-level grades in courses such as Advanced English Grammar & Rhetoric, Expository Writing, and Speech.

Religion

In 2012, I graduated from Baptist Bible College with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Theology; I have performed academic research and writing with regard to a number of Christian denominations. Outside the confines of Christianity, my education at BBC also included a class that dealt with world religions. Beyond the classroom, I have exposited Biblical texts at various Christian churches for various reasons; I have also conducted both one-on-one and group bible studies.

Track & Field

I coached three seasons of collegiate Cross Country at Baptist Bible College in Clarks Summit, PA. My teams participated in both NCAA and NCCAA competitions. In 2013, my men's team took second place overall for Division II at the NCCAA Nationals Race.
