About Karyn

I studied art history at Harvard, initially specializing in ancient art as an undergraduate, but changing my focus to modern art for my graduate work. Though jobs for art historians are scarce, I have never regretted choosing the field. It's given me lots of great opportunities, including the chance to live in Paris while I was researching my dissertation and teaching for Tufts University's "Tufts in Talloires," during which time I lived in a chalet with a magnificent view of the mountains and Lake Annecy. I have taught not only at Tufts, but at Brown, Wellesley, and BU and in the process have met and been inspired by many amazing students.

I love teaching art history, because it is, I believe, among the humanities, the discipline that most opens itself to interdisciplinary thinking. Not only, then, am I giving my students the tools to make them visually literate, but also the opportunity to understand how artistic practice intersects with political, religious, and economic factors. These intersections come as a surprise to some students, including a studio major who had never thought of her own practice in terms of its relations to contemporary political and social issues. Nor did she know that her own interests had deep roots within the history of art. In terms of writing, I believe art history has much to offer students since they must translate the visual into verbal terms, which helps them develop a sensitivity to word choice and to making sure that their reader can understand what they want to convey.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
