About Susan

I am a certified teacher for elementary school, middle school, reading specialist, and educational leadership. I currently teach Reading and English at the middle school level.

I have my B.A. in Elementary Education, M.Ed. in Special Education, and CAGS in Educational Leadership. I am also a certified reading specialist. In addition, I am certified in a rules-based reading program, specifically the Wilson Language System, which I currently use in my position with non-readers.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am certified as a reading specialist and have a master's degree in education. I am familiar with the Common Core as it relates to English Language Arts. I use it on a daily basis when I am planning my lessons for my students in the public school system where I am employed. I have worked in curriculum development in the past, and am current on writing specific objectives for not only my lessons but the individualized education programs that I write for my special needs students.

Dyslexia

I am licensed and certified as a Wilson Language trained teacher, which is the same program as the Orton-Gillingham method. I have also been trained as recently as two years ago in Project Read.
My current position is an inclusionary special education teacher at the middle school level, and previous to this, I was a reading teacher at the middle school level for a number of years. I also have experience in teaching at the elementary school level.

As far as study skills go, I have taught a Study Skills class for a number of years. It is offered for my special needs students. The title of the class is Tutorial meant specifically to address the study skills required to become a better student.
