In addition to my classroom experience, I have more than 10 years of tutoring experience in a wide range of subjects. I specialize in writing, college essays, and AP English. Dedicated to helping students achieve their reading and writing potential, I earned the Top 10% Tutor Award from Wyzant in 2020.

Throughout my teaching and tutoring career, I have also held many other education-related jobs. During my graduate studies, I worked as the Writing Assistant for the accredited SUNY New Paltz School of Business. I helped undergraduates, graduates, and professors improve their writing and research skills. Having also worked as a Conversation Partner and Writing Tutor for the International Department, I have extensive experience helping international students build their conversational English skills and prepare for the TOEFL and IELTS. I taught two Composition courses as an Instructor in the English Department as well. Additionally, I have worked as the Communications and Data Coordinator for WISE Services, a content writer and researcher, and a daycare instructor.

My passion for teaching has only gotten stronger with my years of education and hands-on experience in the field. I believe that when students are excited to learn, they grow the most. To motivate my students, I design student-centered curriculum that acknowledges students’ strengths, caters to their interests, and provides them with individualized assistance. I look forward to helping even more students improve their English skills through tutoring!

Learning English as a second language can be challenging! As an English Literature teacher at an international boarding school, I help ESL students learn and improve their English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills every day. By teaching my students how to break down the reading and writing process into smaller, achievable steps, I give them the tools they need to build their English skill set and grow as English students. Most of my previous teaching and tutoring experience is also rooted in ESL education. During college, I partnered with my university’s International Department, becoming a Conversation Partner and a Writing Tutor in order to help Turkish, Chinese, and Japanese students improve their English skills. I went on to work as a Writing Assistant in the School of Business, which has a large ESL population. I have worked with students of all ESL levels—from beginner to advanced—in my classroom and as a tutor. Helping students improve their English proficiency while also falling in love with learning is something I value as a teacher, and it is a philosophy I bring with me as an ESL tutor.
Grammar,

Grammar

Independent clauses, conjunctions, and commas–oh my! The English language is full of intimidating grammar rules and vocabulary. As an English Literature teacher, I have a strong understanding of the rules of the English language and have helped many students improve their grammar. By beginning with a diagnostic grammar assessment, I gauge a students’ grammar strengths and areas of improvement based on their grade level. I then create individualized grammar lessons that focus on the building the students’ knowledge and skills in their weaker areas. Through mini grammar lessons, practice exercises, and writing assignments, I believe that all students can improve their grammar skills—and, in turn, become more clear and articulate writers!
Proofreading

Proofreading

As a high school English Literature teacher and the Writing Center Director at my school, I help domestic and international high school students edit and proofread their work (in any subject) on a daily basis. I teach my students self-editing and proofreading strategies so that they can learn what works for them and become more independent writers. Because I work mainly with ESL students in my current role, I have a strong understanding of how to help all students spot grammar, word choice, phrasing, etc. errors in their work and improve their English. I also have extensive experience helping business students improve their technical writing, as I worked as the Writing Assistant for my university’s School of Business for two and a half years. Throughout my many years of tutoring, I have helped undergraduates and graduates proofread college/scholarship essays, business plans, dissertations, presentations, cover letters/resumes, research papers, etc. On multiple occasions, I have worked with professors to help them ready their research for publication. No matter the length, genre, or subject of your assignment, I can help you create a strong final draft!

Elementary Education

Common Core,

Common Core

As a Certified Secondary Education English teacher, I am very familiar with the Common Core State Standards for grades 7-12. I have a lot of experience aligning my ELA lessons and curriculum to the New York and Massachusetts state standards in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Benchmarks of student learning, these standards help me ensure that my students are working up to grade level, hitting their target goals in all ELA areas, and are prepared to progress to the next grade at the end of the school year. I can easily assess the areas in which students are struggling and help them achieve their potential. Because I tutor students from all over the country—from Pennsylvania to California—I am also aware of the educational state standards in other states, and I look forward to continuing to help students achieve grade level success—no matter their state!

As an English Literature teacher, I have helped many students build their reading skills. Knowledgeable of many reading strategies—from summarizing to visualizing –I am able to give students of all reading abilities the tools they need to grow in confidence and become independent readers. Due to my ESL background, I also have a strong understanding of how to scaffold students’ reading of challenging books. By breaking down the reading process into smaller steps with pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading activities, I can help students tackle any text. In addition to helping students improve their reading comprehension, I also focus on strengthening students’ text analysis skills, teaching them to think critically about what they have read and how it relates to themselves and the world around them. Making reading personal and meaningful for students is important to me, as I want to help students improve their reading skills while also fostering their love of reading!
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Improving your vocabulary will help you become a stronger reader, writer, and speaker. Luckily, there are many ways to learn new words, like reading every day, studying roots, and using a thesaurus --just to name a few. As an English Literature teacher, I have a lot of experience helping students, especially ESL students, build their vocabulary. From learning the meaning of prefixes and suffixes to how to use context clues, my students gain the tools they need to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words on their own. I also teach my students to use virtual vocabulary flash cards and the waterfall studying method to not just memorize, but learn new words every day. Because repetition is essential to vocabulary-building, with a little bit of guidance and repeated practice, I believe that any student can improve their vocabulary!

ACT English,

ACT English

The ACT essay can be daunting for students, as it follows a format not traditionally taught in schools. Using my knowledge of the test and experience as an English Literature teacher, I have designed an ACT writing curriculum that helps students prepare for and master the ACT essay. From reading and analyzing sample ACT essays to learning how to write a strong thesis statement, I break down the ACT essay into manageable steps, helping students build the confidence and skills they need to not only succeed on the exam, but improve their overall writing ability. Students get personalized feedback on their writing, and I adjust each lesson to address the individual student’s areas of improvement. In my lessons, I also encourage students to study for the ACT writing section by reading. Students who expand their knowledge of current events will be able to formulate an opinion on any ACT essay topic. As a test prep tutor, I look forward to continuing to help students overcome their ACT anxieties and improve their essay scores!

College Counseling

College essay writing can be a daunting task for students, as they often feel like they are writing one of the most important essays of their lives. As an experienced College Counseling tutor, I have created a college essay writing curriculum that helps students overcome their “fear of the blank page” and tackle any writing component of their college application: the common application essay, supplementary essays, personal statements, cover letters, and resumes. From teaching students how to brainstorm a unique essay topic to how to revise their rough draft, I give students the tools they need to write strong essays and stand out on their college application. I also have students read and analyze example college essays so that they have strong models for their own writing. As a 11th and 12th grade English teacher (who also runs the Writing Center and College Counseling Club at my school), I have a lot of experience helping both domestic and international students avoid common college essay writing pitfalls and create powerful, personal pieces of writing for their college applications. One of my favorite subjects to tutor in is college essays, and I look forward to helping even more students discover and showcase their talents to colleges through their writing so that they can get accepted to their dream university!

I graduated from SUNY New Paltz as Valedictorian with a degree in English Adolescent Education and a minor in Psychology. Throughout college, I took many psychology courses, focusing on mental health disorders, social psychology, and cognitive psychology. I keep up-to-date on current news and research in psychology so that my expertise continues to grow. I now use my knowledge to tutor high school students in AP Psychology. Additionally, I have helped many psychology undergraduates and graduates plan, write, and edit their psychology assignments, especially research papers. As an English Literature teacher with a background in psychology, I can not only help you better understand challenging psychology concepts and terms, but I can also help you clearly express your knowledge in your writing!

My teaching became more hands-on and kinesthetic as a result. As a tutor of students with mental health disorders, I can even better individualize my instruction to meet their needs and learning preferences.

As an English Literature teacher with a minor in Psychology, I have a strong understanding of how to help all students improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills. In addition to my education in mental health disorders during college, I partnered with a Special Education teaching assistant during one of my earlier teaching positions; we worked together to adjust the English curriculum to accommodate the needs of the diverse learners in our classroom--from students with dyslexia and ADHD to those with autism. My teaching became more personalized as a result. I always prioritize getting to know my students before moving on to academic study; this allows me to create a learning environment that is more comfortable and convenient for them. Now as a tutor of students with autism, I can even better individualize my instruction to meet my students' learning interests, needs, and preferences.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

Reading,

Reading

Writing

Writing

Writing can be a daunting task for students! As a certified English teacher, I help students overcome their writing anxieties and improve their writing skills every day. I also run my school’s Writing Center, where I work one-on-one with students on their writing in any subject. By breaking down the writing process into smaller, more manageable steps—from brainstorming an essay topic to proofreading a final draft—I give my students the strategies and tools they need to grow as writers. I also believe that reading is an integral part of becoming a strong writer, so I always have my students read and analyze example essays before writing their own. Through this process, I have taught students how to write narrative, expository, persuasive, and argumentative essays from start to finish. I have helped students build their research skills, learn how to write a strong thesis statement, create a writing outline, learn proofreading strategies, etc. Through a writing diagnostic, I can identify a student’s writing strengths and areas of improvement so that I can create targeted lessons that cater to the student’s needs and work with them to help them improve as a writer. My background is writing instruction is extensive. During college, I worked at my university’s School of Business as their Writing Assistant, helping undergraduates, graduates, and professors sharpen their technical writing. I also partnered with the International Department, working as a Writing Tutor during the summer to help Turkish, Chinese, and Japanese students improve their English writing skills. I went on to teach Composition I and II courses as a Composition Instructor for the English Department. Throughout all of these experiences, I kept up-to-date on and learned more about writing trends and strategies, especially in regards to ESL instruction, in order to continually improve my writing instruction. Throughout my many years of teaching and tutoring, I have helped students write college essays, business plans, dissertations, presentations, co

Test Preparation

College Counseling,

I can easily assess the areas in which students are struggling and help them achieve their potential. Because I tutor students from all over the country—from Pennsylvania to California—I am also aware of the educational state standards in other states, and I look forward to continuing to help students achieve grade level success—no matter their state!

Tutoring with academic application

I highly recommend Danielle as a writing tutor. In my sessions with her, she has helped me tremendously with writing a strong personal statement. I was stumped on the draft process and she helped me get my ideas better organized and write with clarity. I'm really happy with the result!

Excellent AP Lit Tutor

Danielle did a wonderful job preparing my son for an AP Lit test. Her instruction was very targeted and efficient - exactly what he needed. In addition, she provided helpful feedback after every lesson so he could review the key points. My son made significant progress in a few lessons with Danielle's help. We have worked with several tutors over the years, and Danielle is the best writing instructor by far!

Very helpful and familiar with the Ap English Language format.

Great at explaining and helping me to improve my writing skills on my english homework assignments. I struggled a lot with getting my thoughts out on paper and organizing my essay. Danielle B. helped me get the thoughts out, and her explanations were of much more help to me than what I had been instructed to do in class. Our sessions helped me a lot to write a sophisticated and well-structured essay, and feel good about my work.

Helpful and patient tutor

Danielle has been very helpful with my son in helping him get his thoughts out on paper and tightening up his writing skills. He is in middle school and she helped him with improving on personal essays, similar to those required for high school admissions. He is a reluctant writer but through her patience and wonderful personality, my son is happy to work with her to improve his English fluency. We highly recommend Danielle! Lately, she has introduced writing competitions as another way to encourage writing and she seems to understand how to motivate middle school children to write.
