For several years, I have tutored students ranging from ages 5 to 14 in a variety of situations, both in schools and homes, and during and after school. As a reading specialist, I generally focus on reading comprehension of an array of texts--fiction and non-fiction--including social studies, science, and literature. I also teach students strategies for taking tests and improving their study skills. Additionally, I have helped emergent and struggling readers with basic reading skills, using an eclectic and fun approach to ensure success and encourage a love for reading. In order to determine need and accurately individualize a learning plan for each student, I always administer assessments at the first tutoring session.
I believe my love for children and their learning, coupled with my sense of humor, knowledge of reading concepts, and years of experience make me a perfect choice for your child! Today was our first meeting and it went very well. My son likes Jennifer and he said she will teach him skills to improve his reading and math.
My son was happy it was a Lady and not a Man, this just made it easier for him to get situated. He enjoyed the morning at the library. Just a very nice person, Jennifer is, she explains things in a way that he feels good about reading.
I could go one about how great and skillful and knowledgeable Jennifer is but when you have a wonderful human being combined with knowledge and patient you end up with a child who falls in love with her tutor.
We asked Jennifer to provide writing assignments for two 9-year-olds over the summer. We had a wonderful experience with Jennifer, who was consistently prepared, calm, and encouraging. Felt it was well worth the coordination, time, and expense. Thank you, Jennifer! We hope to see you again this fall.
Excellent Tutor. She is very patient with my daughter, very knowledgeable and makes the reading enjoyable. She also covers multiplication cards in the same hour. She is fun to have and my daughter learns a lot with her. This is 2014 and I have to wish her a healthy new year so she can keep doing the great work she has been doing with my daughter. Thanks.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been reading the Bible since I was literate and have read it through several times. I also read portions of it every day, have attended and led many different Bible studies over the years, and have taken history and theology courses related to the Bible.
I received a teaching certification in K-6 initially, and have had more than ten years' experience teaching in all of these grades in a classroom setting, both as a permanent and as a substitute teacher. Additionally, I have tutored children at these grade levels in group and individual settings.
I have one year of official music education training, and several months of specific method (Suzuki) training. I taught private beginner piano lessons for two years, as well as group theory lessons. I took piano for several years prior, as well as violin, for 9 years. I also chartered and led a college choir for two years and have sung in choirs for the past 25 years.
I received my reading specialist certification a few years ago, closely followed by a Master of Education in reading. Additionally, I have taught phonics to Kindergarten and first grade classrooms, small groups, and individuals. I have also taught phonics to third grade Title I students.
I have tutored students specifically to improve their study skills. Additionally, I have been a student for many years off and on and have learned to manage my time well and study well. As a result, I have made increasingly better grades as I've honed my study skills over the years.
I took violin lessons for 9 years and taught beginner violin for one year in college. I have also taught my daughter violin. I would be qualified to teach beginner violin (for the first two years or so).
