I am a Massachusetts certified elementary school teacher and have recently retired after 32 years in the Plymouth school system. I was a Title I teacher for 28 years teaching reading and math in grades 1-5. The last 4 years of my career were spent teaching kindergarten which I absolutely loved. Prior to my years in the public schools, I taught preschool for 3 years.
Having spent a good deal of my career as a Title I teacher, I am used to working one on one, assessing a student's needs and then reinforcing skills using methods and materials that are effective as well as motivating. I love working closely with children and enjoy watching them grow and develop academically. As a teacher, being a part of this is extremely rewarding!
I am familiar with the Everyday Math program which is used in the Plymouth Elementary Schools. I have many fun and motivating activities which help to reinforce the various skills.
I have used Benchmark assessments to determine instructional reading levels and have many "tools" to help students become independent readers. My hope is that every child I work with will develop a life-long love of reading.
As a kindergarten teacher I found much success with a program that uses colorful pictures, mnemonics and hand cues to teach the letters and sounds. This program helps to improve phonemic awareness and phonics as well as decoding and encoding. I also use songs to help students learn the grade level sight words.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 29 years of experience as a Title I math teacher in grades 1-5 and have also taught kindergarten math for four years. I am familiar with the Everyday Math program and have many fun activities to help reinforce the various math skills at each grade level. I have also tutored before and after school programs helping to prepare students for MCAS math testing. Math has always been my favorite subject and I like to demonstrate to my students that math can be fun!
I have had numerous courses in the teaching of phonics as an undergraduate and graduate student. As a Title I tutor, one of the programs I used to teach phonics was Project Read. I have been trained in Telian "Lively Letters" and used this especially in kindergarten. This is a very effective program for teaching phonics. I have also been trained in DIBELS, Benchmark Assessment Systems, and Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Interventions.
