Reading and writing have been my passion since a very young age. I have over a decade of experience working with adolescents with emotional and behavioral difficulties as well as learning and developmental disabilities. I am currently working towards my Master's in special education in hopes of inspiring children and adolescents to uncover not just a fundamental understanding of proper English reading and writing skills, but also to instill a hunger to read and write and improve their lives in numerous ways by doing so. I believe that a strong command of the English language and solid comprehension and writing skills are the most important lessons to be taken away from any educational setting, These skills lay the foundation for improving oneself in all other academic subjects. I learned this lesson first hand in high school as I found myself struggling with many academics outside of English Lit and writing courses. I began reading voraciously on my own and never went anywhere without a book in hand. I went on to produce a perfect score on the verbal portion of my SAT's, even without having received formal tutoring. My grades began to improve in social sciences and math as a result of my increased vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.
My academic strengths have always lay in the areas of organization, study skills and note taking, reading comprehension, grammar and spelling, and generating a consistent output of exceptional writing and documentation in the realms of creative writing, literary analysis, and persuasive writing. I am able to produce graded writing samples from my undergraduate career in support of my skills. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have regarding my tutoring style and experience as well as any other information which will help you determine the best fit for your child's current academic needs.
I am passionate about reading and writing and deem these academic fields to be most important as they form the basic skills needed to succeed in any other academic arena. I take immense pleasure in sharing my love of English Literature and writing with children and adolescents and have been very personally rewarded in the past by seeing the results of the combination of my instruction in conjunction with a child/adolescent's efforts.
I find that producing an exceptional piece of writing begins with organizational and note taking and outlining skills. I typically begin by teaching these techniques as they are the building blocks for any thorough and comprehensive piece of writing, be it creative, persuasive, analytical or otherwise.
Please contact me at your convenience with any questions you have that I have not touched upon in this profile. I look forward to the possibility of working with you and your child to help them advance academically as well as personally, as there is nothing better for one's self confidence than setting, working towards and accomplishing a positive goal. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have approximately 2 years of experience tutoring secondary school students in English Literature, reading comprehension and grammar studies - occasionally at the AP level. As a personal aside, I acknowledge that it is much to the chagrin of my family and friends that I strongly believe in politely and discreetly pointing out one's grammatical errors in speech as I have learned best by having such lapses brought to my own attention when I was error. I believe that I am one of the few people who appreciate being corrected on the inappropriate use of grammar or vocabulary as I believe it saves me from possibly making the same mistake in a situation which may carry more gravity.
I have an expansive knowledge and detailed comprehension of the wide array of English Literature classics and, in many cases, have spent time as an undergraduate conducting in depth analysis of the greater works of Twentieth century American fiction. I am currently working my way through the Modern Library's list of the top 100 novels of the Twentieth century.
I am currently in the process of obtaining my Master's degree in special education. I have over a decade of experience working closely with adolescents with emotional and behavioral disabilities including but not limited to ADD/ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, anxiety and depression and Bi-polar Disorder.
I have approximately 2 yrs history tutoring AP English Literature courses at the secondary school level. I have an exceptional knowledge of English vocabulary which I attribute to my history of being a voracious reader.
