About Christine

I have been a special needs teacher and tutor for over fifteen years. I have seen the progress that can be made in small settings and know that this is ideal for students with special needs and any student who feels they are struggling. As the oldest child of two siblings with special needs, I know how frustrating and overwhelming school can be and can help students achieve the success that their hard work warrants them. The MCAS writing portion has been my main focus for the past few years. Students can feel more confident in their writing when they have the right tools, and I help to develop these tools. I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve success! I have been a special needs teacher and tutor for over fifteen years. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have taught students with special needs, ADD and ADHD. I understand the frustration and know that working one on one is the best way to help students achieve success. Students with ADD/ADHD struggle with this in EVERY aspect of their life. It is not something that is turned on and off and can be just as frustrating for the student as it is for other people in their lives. I think that some people believe it is a behavioral problem that can be controlled with self-discipline. This is the equivalent of telling a diabetic to create healthy insulin levels. This is not something that is outgrown or by willful choice, and needs patience and perseverance to help students achieve success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a teacher for fifteen years. I have seen firsthand the benefits of a one n one approach to learning. I have taught elementary education, special education and GED test taking. I truly love when a student has that "aha" moment and feels successful. I am the oldest child of special needs siblings and have seen the frustration and success that occurs in small settings.

Phonics

I have been trained in Project Read, which is a program that is similar to Orton-Gillingham. I have worked for the past three years as a tutor for special needs students who struggle with phonics and have had positive results.

Public Speaking

I competed in high school at the National Speech and Debate competition and went on to be an assistant coach during my college years. This, coupled with over fifteen years of teaching, has helped to make me a confident public speaker. I look forward to helping others develop these skills and feel confident and competent in public speaking.

Reading

I can help in areas of fluency and comprehension. I can teach skills that are needed for students' success in ELA and standardized tests.

Special Needs

I have been a special needs teacher for fifteen years. I am also a sister of special needs siblings and have seen first hand growth, challenges, joy and obstacles that these students deal with on a daily basis. I value working in a small setting, using a VAKT approach (visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile) to best accommodate the various learning styles of my students.

Study Skills

I have developed what I call different tricks and strategies for studying. Students need different modalities to achieve success. I use VAKT (visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile) studying methods to accommodate my students' learning styles.

Very good

Christine is very patient with my son and very positive for him. He is doing much better since he began with Christine. My son is doing better in school thanks to Christine. She remains very patient with a boy who does not much like homework!
