Passionate about helping a variety of students at different levels, I am eager to share this same passion for academic learning with those who seek my help. I am a current undergraduate at Yale University majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and in the select 5-year BS/MPH program at the Yale School of Public Health in Chronic Disease Epidemiology. I am a driven and highly organized individual. Students who have reached out in need of tutoring have commented on my ability to devote my full attention to their diverse needs, provide supplemental materials to aid in the learning process, and to be available at all times for questions. When first meeting with a student, I strive to find an accurate level at which he/she is currently at and build a plan molded to the individual student. From this point, I create an effective work table dependent on the amount of time and ultimate academic goal that must be reached.
I am an experienced tutor in the academic subjects of science (specialization in Chemistry and Biology), mathematics (including Advanced Placement Calculus/Differential Equations), the Latin language, English, History, elementary reading and writing, SAT Test Prep, the college application/essay process, and study skills/habits. I strongly believe that tutoring must be supported with a depth of background in the respective academic areas. Having received a Perfect Score on the National Latin Exam, Excellence on the National Biology Exam, and Distinction on the National Chemistry Exam, I aim to supplement my past credentials with growing knowledge. I believe that it is critical for students to gain not only a knowledge of the respective material that they are learning, but also to foster long-standing study habits that will remain firmly grounded for the future.
During my high school years, I was involved in Latin peer tutoring, assisting a multitude of students ranging from middle school to high school. As a member of the National Honor Society and National Latin Honor Society, I directed the Tutoring Program that has allowed teachers to pair students with members of the Honor Society. At Yale, I spearheaded and implemented the first integrated tutoring program for low-income and first generation college students. I established a network of tutoring resources with the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning, Residential College Quantitative Reasoning and Writing Program, and the Yale Writing Center.
I aim to deliver the same strong work ethic that has become firmly grounded in my own studies. Having experienced standardized testing (SAT and ACT), the college application process, and the rigor of high school work, I plan to aid both elementary and high school students in preparing for more complex levels of coursework that will provide an apt foundation for college and higher learning. Very patient and soft-spoken with my teenage son. Just in an hour my son learned a lot from Lauren, she brought her own material for him to help with Latin. She is great.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Throughout high school, I have tutored students in a variety of academic disciplines, including the Latin language, SAT preparation, and Advanced Placement work. Having recently applied and gained acceptance to the nation's top universities, including Yale University and University of California at Berkeley, I am capable of providing assistance to those who need guidance during a stressful and challenging process. As a student mentor, I aim to devise an efficient time-table and strategy for standardized testing, application materials, and college essays. I have worked with students preparing for college, as well as in career-path choices.
