About Aubrey

I have a master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and a bachelor's degree in English Education. I have been teaching English to international students since 2007. I started tutoring privately in 2010. Most of my students are college students who need to pass the TOEFL or just want to improve their English. I have also worked with American students who need extra help with reading and writing.

I primarily tutor online, but face-to-face tutoring is possible in a limited area. I enjoy working with students of all ages and backgrounds. My students and I work together to develop a plan for tutoring, and then I develop lessons that address a student's specific needs. I also provide students with resources they can use on their own to improve their abilities.

I have taught reading, writing, grammar, speaking and listening, as well as TOEFL and test taking workshops. Vocabulary development is important for all language learners and is an important focus of tutoring sessions. As a college instructor, I have taught international students and American students reading, writing, and study skills classes. I mostly help younger students with reading.

Please contact me with any questions. I am happy to tell you more about myself and learn about you before the tutoring session. You can also send me a message if you don't see a time that works for you on my calendar. My schedule is flexible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a master's degree in TESOL and a bachelor's degree in English Education. I've been teaching English since 2005 and tutoring since 2010. I've taught and tutored in all areas of English: reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking and listening.

ESL/ESOL

I have a master's degree in TESOL and have been teaching ESL to international students since 2007. I've taught reading, writing, grammar, and speaking and listening as well as created workshops for students who want to improve their English.

Grammar

This is one of my areas of strength in teaching ESL. The grammar lessons I create include a brief lesson followed by sentence level practice then paragraph level practice. Getting students to recognize and fix their own errors is the end goal of grammar instruction.

Reading

I've taught reading to ESL students and American college students. I've also tutored younger students in reading. Developing decoding skills, fluency, and confidence are important goals for reading tutoring. However, some students can read well but struggle in comprehension. I can help with that too.

TOEFL

I have a master's degree in TESOL. Since 2007, I've worked with international students who need to pass the TOEFL in order to continue with their studies. I've administered the test as well and know how rigorous it can be. I've helped students raise their TOEFL scores in a short amount of time.

Vocabulary

Whenever I teach ESL, I focus a lot on vocabulary because it's an important part of language development. I focus on understanding the word in its various forms and proper use of the word. For native English speakers, the goal for vocabulary development could be to increase academic vocabulary or increase reading speed.

Writing

Teaching and tutoring in writing is probably my greatest strength. I've been teaching writing since 2005. And I've taught writing to international students as well as Americans. I use a process approach where students generate and organize ideas before they begin to write.
