About Jennifer

I have over 13 years of experience as both a classroom teacher and tutor. I have taught and/or tutored students in grades kindergarten through twelfth. I enjoy teaching and particularly enjoy the one on one time with students that I tutor. My students and I find a way to have an enjoyable time while working together, even when tackling the most tedious of subjects. I find that humor mixed with high expectations, both of my student and myself, creates a delightful atmosphere in which to learn and to teach.

My strengths lie in two opposite age needs. For students in lower grades, I have been very successful in helping students become better decoders in their reading by a very strong emphasis on phonics. This skill also greatly helps their spelling as well. For the upper grades, my passion and strength lies in two areas--teaching students how to analyze works of literature and go deeper with them and writing essays, papers, etc. Most of my students have enjoyed the process of going deeper in works of literature immensely, and I have had students correspond with me even into their college years thanking me for all that I taught them. For me, there is nothing quite like opening up a whole new world to a student via a great work of literature! I have also had tremendous success teaching students--starting at second grade--how to write essays. The skill of being able to write clearly, effectively, and concisely is one that cannot be stressed enough, and my students not only learn the how-to but also gain a confidence in themselves as writers.

I also use my teaching gift at my church where I lead a weekly women's Bible study. I just thoroughly enjoy teaching no matter the age!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I attended seminary and took classes in church history, theology, and ethics. I taught Bible classes for over ten years to all ages from 1st through 12th grade. Currently I am teaching Bible to women at my church.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was a successful k-6th grade classroom teacher for 9 years. I have taught all grades from 1st through 12th, and I have tutored kindergarten students as well.

Elementary Math

Few things are more important than a good arithmetic foundation for young students. With a good foundation, students can then move forward into their high school and college careers with confidence and success. As an elementary teacher for 10+ years, I spent much time teaching my students the fundamentals of math.

English

I spent many years teaching English in a classroom setting. I've taught all grades from fourth to twelfth grade in all aspects of English--literature, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. I've also got a BA in English and have taken many hours of graduate level English classes.

Grammar

The importance of good grammar cannot be over-emphasized or taught. Sadly, however, teachers are finding their schedules are far too crammed to find enough time to duly teach grammar rules to their students. As a tutor in this field, I aim to work alongside what is being done in the classroom already, and then to move forward and cover areas that are not. While grammar is not one of the more exciting subjects to learn, it is KEY to achieving success in EVERY field of one's choosing. Because of that, I take it very seriously and strive to help my students become excellent grammarians.

Literature

One of my greatest joys and passions is helping a student unlock the beauty of a work of literature. In the younger grades, students learn how to read by decoding letters and words. What I love to do is to each older students how to really read a book--how to drink it in and savor it completely. I accomplish this by methodically teaching them how to read between the lines. I teach them proper character analysis, plot mapping, theme searching, etc. As an added bonus, I also teach them how to WRITE about what they have read.

Phonics

As a former elementary teacher, I was trained to teach phonics using the ABeka method. I had so much success with the method that I employ it when I tutor students with difficulty in reading. The Abeka method teaches rote learning of "special sounds," which then leads to the act of decoding as well as spelling correctly.

Prealgebra

I have tutored students in their pre-algebra courses. These students have gone on to succeed in their math courses.

Reading

I use a very strong, tried and true phonics method to teach my students how to become better readers. I also stress reading comprehension, even for the youngest of students, as this skill is so very necessary for all academic work.

SAT Writing

I am not only an avid reader and writer personally, but I am also an avid teacher of reading and writing to children of all ages. I have spent 10+ years in the classroom pushing students to achieve their best in all subjects, but the subjects that ignite my passion the most are reading and writing. I feel inordinate joy at showing students the ins and outs of writing--helping them not only with the how-to's of writing but also giving them CONFIDENCE as writers themselves; I am also very passionate about opening work of literary art to young minds and helping them see beyond the printed words. My years of experience as a teacher of English combined with my English degree and post-graduate work give me a great foundation as a tutor of writing and reading.

Study Skills

As an undergraduate student, I took a Study Skills class. While I really didn't learn any new grand ideas, it did cement in me some of the ideas that I had already implemented in my own studying. I have taken those skills and used them to help my own students through the years. I have found a structured, organized approach to studying leads to the best pay-off. My study skills methods not only worked for me personally (I graduated MAGNA CUM LAUDE), but they have also worked for those students who applied what I taught them.

Writing

I have had great successes in teaching writing to children in many different grades. I have taught second through twelfth graders how to write virtually pain-free 3-5 paragraph essays. I wrote about this process more in depth on my blog on my profile. Please take a look at the post CONQUERING THE ESSAY to see how I approach teaching writing to students.
