About Laura

My interest in language and in teaching comes from my father, who came to the United States at age 17. My father didn't know how to speak English, and he taught himself by reading. He always had a strong accent in English, which he was not happy about. He knew that if he spoke better English, he could have been much more successful. Because of this, I am interested in helping students to strengthen their English skills, and to be as successful as they possibly can in this country.

I also enjoy the process of teaching very much, particularly tutoring, because I know that it can have such a powerful and positive impact in a person's life.

I specialize in Accent Modification and have worked with people from all over the world to help them speak English more clearly. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist, and I have a deep understanding of all that goes into speaking clearly. I have worked with clients individually and in groups, taught classes in Accent Modification, and taught workshops to other ESL teachers to show them better ways to teach Pronunciation. I really enjoy helping people to speak English more clearly.

I also specialize in teaching English as a Second Language and I have taught ESL for 15 years in a variety of settings, mainly with adults. I will be receiving my Masters degree in teaching English as a Second Language in August (2016).

I have always enjoyed teaching ESL classes, but I particularly love tutoring ESL.

I am available for tutoring in person and on-line. My availability changes according to my work schedule, however I try to be as flexible as possible. Also, I do require a 24 hour notification if you need to cancel a session.

I look forward to meeting with you and helping you to be successful in English!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

As an ESL teacher, I have taught international students in Intensive English programs how to effectively give oral presentations. As a Speech-Language pathologist, effective speaking was a part of my educational background. Additionally, in my career as an SLP, I needed to speak publicly in order to give in-service presentations to other health care professionals. I have also been a member of Toastmasters, and have gone through their series of 10 initial presentations. And lastly, I have spoken in various settings, including public television, presenting workshops, and speaking at public libraries, on the subject of Accent Reduction.
