I have been a carpenter, a cook, a classroom teacher. I earned my Masters in Ed. degree from Smith College. My focus is on teaching problem solving strategies, critical reasoning and practical skills. I make real world connections to classroom subjects. I look for ways to use students' interests and skills as the framework that supports their learning new material.

Math is Art, math is money, math is in everything we do. My experience in teaching and using math combines 25 years as a self-employed carpenter and cook with 8 years in a classroom teaching math to adolescents with social/emotional disabilities. I teach hands on skills in measurement, design, and construction. I have a toolkit of games and projects that support learning and retention of math building blocks.

I have a lifelong enthusiasm for the English language and its etymology. It's a rich soup of words and ideas from all over the world. Both vocabulary and spelling make more sense when you know whether you're looking at a Latin or Greek root, or a word taken from an African or Asian language

In learning, each new venture is an opportunity to consolidate existing skills in a new context. Mastery of a skill creates a foundation for the next level of learning. I learn from every student, how to collaborate, how to communicate clearly, how to make sense of the world. I enjoy figuring out what works.

My 25 years as a carpenter, combined with over a decade of classroom teaching gave me a deep understanding of ways to use math in real world applications. I use art, modelmaking, and games to build students interest and confidence in the 4 basic operations, fractions and decimals, understanding word problems and other basics.

I taught at a school for students with "Social/Emotional Disabilities" for 10 years. My subjects included Math, Woodshop, and Vocational Skills. I worked with students from age 8 through High School, but primarily with adolescents. My preference for teaching skills that arise from a students interest often works well with ASD students.
