About Sarah

Whether you’re looking for a tutor to help with GRE vocabulary, fourth grade reading, academic essays or creative writing, I can help. I’ve taught and facilitated in a wide range of contexts. During my Master’s (Dalhousie University, 2006), I acted as a Teaching Assistant in Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Philosophy courses. Last year, I designed and co-facilitated a group in Contemplative Bibliotherapy or “creative reading” (writing and art in response to favorite books) for clients and providers at Windhorse Integrative Mental Health. Currently, I participate in leading nature education and exploration programs for elementary school classes through the Arcadia Nature Conservancy.
I’m also a published poet and journalist, and my poetry has been anthologized in Undercurrents: New Voices in Canadian Poetry, edited by Robyn Sarah. I value approaches to teaching that highlight the intelligence, creativity and competence of students. Not everyone knows (yet) how, for example, to write an argument-based essay in the accepted academic format, but everyone has a unique and valuable approach to language which I believe it is my responsibility and pleasure as a teacher to honor and help nurture.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
