About Lynn

I am a professional educator and artist with 13 years of academic classroom experience and 7 years of tutoring from my home-based business. I am also an artist with an accomplished practice within an array of mediums. I love to teach and tutor a variety of students who have interests and passions for learning all subjects. Being new to the Pioneer Valley is exciting because there are so many people in this area who make learning and education their priority.

I am looking for clients with whom I can utilize my talents and experience to mentor, inspire, and help boost students' self-confidence through tutoring sessions or art instruction. A typical academic session, depending on the age and needs of the individual student, would be 30 minutes in length. I have found that this is the most focused and effective length of time, especially for elementary school children. Many families in the past have opted for 2-3 sessions per week to get the maximum benefit of one-on-one tutoring. Art sessions would likely be 45-60 minutes, due to the nature of the process of art-making itself, and would likely be 1 session per week or even bi-weekly. I also offer adult art instruction as well.
"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement, and nothing can be done without hope and confidence." -- Helen Keller

I was an elementary classroom teacher in the public sector for 13 years, primarily teaching third and fourth grade, but I have done long-term substitute teaching for art grades K-5 and middle school math and ELA. I hold a BS-ed in Elementary Education and a MS-ed in Reading and Literacy. I taught through both the Expeditionary Learning and International Baccalaureate models. I have my gifted/talented endorsement and my art endorsement. Besides my extensive education, I have experience integrating differentiated instruction, consistent assessment, and pay attention to the learning styles of my students so that they can best be successful.

My MS-ed degree in Reading and Literacy from Walden University prepared me for high-level instruction for my students, and gave me the foundation to be able to really connect with my clients on an individual level using the best, up to date practices. Reading is a passion of mine and I love to share that life-long gift with children.

Besides having a BFA in painting and a minor in art history, art has always been a passion of mine. I am a practicing artist with many years of experience teaching art to both adults and children. Art is very self-expressive, and although I give instruction based on the needs and goals of the student, I generally believe that there is no "right" or "wrong" to art-making, only a willingness to explore ideas.

When starting out, I like to initially have a short meeting with potential clients to assess your needs, goals, and whether or not we are a good fit for each other. If both parties agree, a schedule is created and tutoring or instruction begins. I prefer to do sessions from my home office and offer a discounted price for this.

I have many great references, so please don't hesitate to contact me and ask any questions that you might have. I hope to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
