In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken over 100 hours of coursework in literacy studies to earn a doctorate in language, literacy and culture. As I see it a person understands word knowledge in two ways. First we need general knowledge about a new word , when we do not know how to spell it or when we do not know the meaning of the word. To become fully literate we need specific knowledge about individual words. Our spelling system has three basic principles of spelling- alphabetic because is represents the relationship between letters and sounds, pattern and meaning.
