Hello! I have been a professional tutor for nine years and I've seen many different approaches to tutoring! I believe in a focused and fun approach to one-on-one academic help! That's right- focused and fun! I get to know my students, whether they are in elementary school or post grad, and I find out their interests! If you can relate the subject matter to your life, then you can really learn it. Plus, there are fun ways to understand information such as: conversation, games, contests, applied learning, projects, and creativity. I also teach strategies and study plans for test taking.
I have my Massachusetts teaching license for High School and Middle School English Language Arts and Theater. I have tutored in Math for grades 1-10. I have a 4.0 G.P.A. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an M.F.A. from Goddard College with one of my focuses being Education. I have worked with students with learning disabilities and I.E.P.s. I want to help you or your student succeed! More importantly I want to create positive opportunities for my students to enjoy learning and to thrive in their lives! I hope to meet with you soon! Hello! Elizabeth is very knowledgeable in the math that she teaches. She works very well with my 12 year old and is extremely patient with him. She gives a better understanding of the math that is being taught in class and breaks it down to a level where he can understand the basic concepts.
I saw her once a week prior to taking the SATS and was able to improve my score. She was always prepared with different readings and materials during our tutoring sessions. She was very nice and fun to be around. I would recommend her as a tutor.
Sky has been a wonderfully patient and helpful tutor with my teenage daughter. She appreciates the assistance with her work and organization. I appreciate her flexibility and encouragement.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked helping students aged 5 to 18 with phonics and reading. I was trained in ABC Darian when I worked at Learning Styles Tutoring agency in East Longmeadow, MA for three years. I have used this method to assist many students in recognizing phonemes and in being able to sound out new words. I also have training in Read 180 which I learned when I was an English teacher at New Leadership Charter School in Springfield, MA. While this is a comprehensive reading program and not focused on phonics, I often use the model of having different forms of media and instruction to vary my teaching approach in reading as I center the student's material around their reading level. It helps greatly to have reading material that the student is interested in and that relates to their life and hobbies as well.
Reading comprehension is an important part of the SAT. Students can learn how to let the questions lead the way on their SAT test and therefore save time on their test.
I have a 4.0 G.P.A. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an M.F.A. from Goddard College with one of my focuses being Education. I have tutored many students over the past eight years who have individualized education plans (IEPs). I take the time to understand what challenges and strengths these students possess and how to accommodate them on tests and in school work. I currently work full time for a tutoring company and have had instruction on how to work with IEP students. I have worked with students diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, and comprehension disorders. I lead students through material at a pace and at increments that are suitable for them. I also am informed by Howard Gardener's multiple intelligence theory when I tutor. I present information in many formats and I especially focus on the learning style of each student.
