About Kelsie

Salvete, omnes!

I am a Latin teacher with 14 years of Latin, initial 6-12 licensure in Massachusetts, a Master of Teaching in Latin and Classical Humanities from UMass Amherst, and a double BA in Classical Languages and Linguistics from UC Berkeley. I've recently completed my MAT program, have secured a position at a public high school in New Jersey, and am looking to fill my summer with Latin instruction to keep my skills sharp.

ABOUT ME

I was born in California but moved to the Pioneer Valley for graduate school. I love it here! I'd never experienced a real winter before, and I'd never seen trees change color. The only thing I dislike about the east coast is its humid summers, but thankfully, there's air conditioning to keep me cool.

I spend my free time designing pen-and-paper RPGs for my students, hosting parties for my friends at my beautiful Northampton condo, playing Bioware video games (not too much time for that, now), experimenting with recipes in the kitchen, and--you guessed it--reading Latin for fun.

Also, cats are better than dogs.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I am a flexible and innovative educator who uses a combination of methods, approaches, and mediums to assist students in reaching their learning goals. Drill-and-kill with charts will only get students so far; they need to have an active and working knowledge of Latin's structures and vocabulary to succeed. To that end, I employ spoken Latin and written composition, volume of reading and pattern-based practice in context to decrease dependence on glosses, dictionaries, and notes.

Lessons are delivered via lecture, question-and-answer, technology, worksheets, or games; individually, in classes, or in pairs; and range from student-centered to teacher-centered, checking for comprehension every step of the way.

EXPERIENCE

Classical Latin, 14 years: fluent in speaking, reading, and writing

Tutoring, 11 years: Latin (textbook, AP, National Latin Exam, independent study), 5-12 and adult

Teaching, 3 years: 5-12 and adult, especially high school

Latin authors: Vergil, Caesar, Cicero, Horace, Catullus, Pliny, Livy, Ovid, Plautus, Apuleius, Tacitus, Martial, others.

Textbooks: Cambridge, Ecce Romani, Oxford, Lingua Latina, Latin Via Ovid, Wheelock, Latin for the New Millennium, Latin for Americans

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

My education in the two-year University of Massachusetts, Amherst M.A.T. Program has provided training invaluable to a career in teaching. The program is well-respected throughout the northeast, and acts as a feeder school for many of the Latin programs in the region--there is a 100% placement rate for every one of its graduates. Beyond traditional Master’s coursework (advanced reading and translation courses), we take pedagogy courses in the teaching of Latin grammar, literature, and Roman culture for the introductory to AP level, where we exchange, explore, and hone ideas then applied in the university classes we teach. By the time I began my student teaching, I had a strong theoretical foundation in Latin pedagogy and three semesters of university-level classroom experience, not including that gained from educational work prior to enrollment in the Program. This has enabled me to focus on the more elusive and important aspects of effective instruction: classroom management, forming strong connections with students, and backwards-designed curricular planning.

I completed my student teaching at the Springfield Renaissance School in Springfield, MA, where I taught 9th grade Latin 1, 10th grade Latin 2, and 12th grade Latin IV honors with full responsibility. There, I designed my own curriculum in a textbook-free environment, applying a variety of methods and approaches to reach students of all competencies and learning styles.

Prior to that, I graduated summa cum laude and with a 4.0 from the University of California, Berkeley's distinguished Classics undergraduate program, giving the student address at my department's graduation ceremony and receiving the only Chair's Award for Distinction in Classics--the highest award offered by my department. In high school, I received a 5 on my AP Latin and AP English Literature Exams among many others, perfect scores of 800 on the SAT writing and reading sections, a weighted GPA of 4.86, and was a National Merit Scholar finalist.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

English writing and composition, parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adverbs, participles, etc.), independent and dependent clauses, syntax, and minutia (e.g., the difference between positive, comparative, and superlative adverbs or adjectives, personal versus reflexive pronouns, etc.).

Latin

Reinforcement in grammar, translation, sight reading, composition, scansion, and textual analysis of Latin for beginning to advanced students of any age. Assistance with academic papers and research in the field of Classics, touching on Classical history and art history, historical linguistics, mythology, daily life, culture, and social issues. Textbooks: Cambridge, Oxford, Latin For Americans, Ecce Romani, Latin Via Ovid, Wheelock.

Proofreading

Proofreading papers for spelling, grammar, and syntax, with suggestions for improving diction (vocabulary choices) and clarity of ideas via sentence structure. Assistance with refining or inserting figures of speech which contribute to the subject--running metaphors, similes, synecdoche, etc.

SAT Reading

I worked as an SAT prep instructor for Catalyst Tutoring in the three core subject areas of the general SAT: reading, writing, and math. I taught full-sized classes on a commission basis: students would sign up for a two-day weekend class and I would meet them there. We followed Catalyst's set two-day curriculum: one day for reading and writing, the other day for math. During the class, we reviewed basic concepts and also went over valuable test-taking strategies, down to which of A-E is most commonly the right answer.

Vocabulary

Assistance with expanding one's lexicon, especially in the fields of academic, creative, or professional writing, or for SAT prep. Study basic etymology, learning the Latin roots with which many never before encountered English words can be decoded.

Writing

Work through multiple drafts of your academic, creative, and professional pieces, guided by feedback on grammar, syntax, style, and diction. Particular focus on the expression of authorial intent with clarity and precision.
