About Elizabeth

I am an experienced high school English teacher and administrator (22 years of teaching). I have also taught history and Latin, from grades 7-12. I spent 5 years working as a learning specialist and organizational/academic coach at Harvard University. I have taught ESL at a strong independent school, as well as creative writing in high schools and at Smith College. I'm Harvard-educated (undergraduate and graduate).

My tutoring style is informal and connective, supportive and rigorous at once. I love to work with students on their writing -- be it creative, college application essays, or analytical essay writing. I have worked with people from age 10 to age 40, and enjoy all ages.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I worked as a learning specialist at Harvard university, working primarily with graduate students after they received neuropsych testing, introducing them to study, organizational and other learning strategies. I then co-founded an Academic Support Center to do similar work at the high school level. I worked with many high school students with ADD and ADHD, teaching them ways to remain focused and resist distraction, as well as organizational strategies that ranged from using planners/calendars effectively to differing ways to map/chart an argument if a traditional outline format didn't work. Often, doodling can be harnessed in outline form, I discovered.

Dyslexia

I worked as a learning specialist at Harvard university, working primarily with graduate students after they received neuropsych testing, introducing them to study, organizational and other learning strategies. I then co-founded an Academic Support Center to do similar work at the high school level. I work with students with ADD, executive processing disorder, dyslexia, the whole array.

ISEE

I have worked with several students preparing for both the ISEE and SSAT, primarily on the verbal side though I've also helped younger students with the math. A good part of what I can offer has to do with organizational and test-taking strategies. A longtime independent school teacher, I am quite familiar with these tests.

Proofreading

I am an experienced editor and proofreader. I have worked with many academics completing dissertations and/or articles, helping to polish their writing. In my editing/proofreading work, I guiding principle is to make sure that the author's voice remains clear and distinctive, even as I fix any errors and clarify syntax.

Study Skills
