Hello! My name is Sam, I hold a degree in Secondary Education with a subject area focus in English and Literature. My methodology is heavily invested in Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, in that I try to find the best fit for each student, based on his or her interests and talents. I find that the best way to ensure that a student grasps the material is to make it enjoyable and hilarious. This comes easier to some subjects than others, as you can imagine.
I have considerable teaching experience, having spent my undergraduate hopping between schools in Hartford, CT, and a summer camp in Pennsylvania. I also spent a year teaching ESL in Pohang, Korea! Annyeonghaseyo! Jeoneun hangugmal haji anhseubnida. I'm also a member of MENSA, but having now met a good number of Mensans, no longer feel that it's as big an accomplishment as it sounds.
I am an accomplished professional writer, having sold several comedy articles to list-based supersite Cracked.com, which have been read upwards of half a million times. I have published one book of poetry, and I have a novel due out in the spring. I am also editing a charity anthology of poetry, which is due out at some indistinct point in the future due to the fact that managing poets is an experience not unlike juggling goats. I am a regular fixture at local open mic establishments, having already secured two paying feature shows, despite having spent less than a year writing spoken word-style poetry.
So, yes. Should you select me for your tutoring needs, I will do my best to show your child how algebra can be just as enjoyable as fighting zombies and rescuing princesses or whatever kids do in videogames these days. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I tutor many 2nd graders online through Elevate Learning.
I spent one year teaching English as a Second Language with Chung Dahm, Inc in Pohang, South Korea. I am trained and certified in grammar, reading/writing, listening, and speaking. I have considerable experience in all of these matters.
I am particularly experienced with ESL and international students.
I have worked in a PC repair shop, where most of our efforts went towards virus removal and hardware upgrades. I know my way around most back-end functions that the average user could possibly come across without doing serious damage to their system.
As a community organizer, I have a great deal of experience firing up large crowds of people with public speaking. In addition to that, I also have a great deal of experience as a teacher, which is basically public speaking on a smaller scale.
I have taught classes in study skills before, including new and exciting ideas such as the use of stimulating essential oils and the importance of keeping the brain active during long sessions.
I was heavily involved with theater groups in high school and college, doing backstage work as well as performance. I've also wired microphone systems in addition to set construction.
