Bio

Firm but loving is my motto when teaching. Children respond when they understand expectations for success in a creative and supportive environment. Students learn best when it is at their own pace and in their own time to fully blossom. When I taught, I believed wholeheartedly that the curriculum should be adjusted to connect with my students and their talents and interests. I am a masters level certified teacher in both Connecticut and Massachusetts.

I've tutored students in kindergarten through seventh grade in reading, writing, math, fluency and spelling. I believe in a creative approach to learning, adapting to their needs by creating more personalized lessons.
As a tutor, I develop lessons in the same fashion as in the classroom. I have worked with various programs that have proven to be successful in developing higher scores and greater success and confidence.

My first session is always free so that we can meet, get to know each other and discover the optimum tutoring style.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored children for the last 12 years in literacy using Wilson Fundations, Barton Reading Program and Reading Street. When I taught 2nd grade in Connecticut, I believed in a firm but loving method to teaching to promote high expectations while in a safe, caring and creative environment. Children learn best when their interests are piqued and they are given the ability to explore at their own pace and in their own time.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Elementary students need a solid foundation in math in order to achieve success later in high school and beyond. Math is learned best when it is completed with hands on games and manipulation tools. Math is my passion and should be fun!

As a kindergarten instructional assistant, I used Handwriting Without Tears to teach the basics of handwriting along with various creative techniques to achieve mastery. I have also used Wilson techniques with older children which proved successful in mastery.

Phonics

Oral language is the core of our communication. Preschool children should be talking through their play with stories expressing their thoughts while at the same time, learning letter recognition and developing a love for the world of books. As children progress in reading development, vivid vocabulary, comprehension should be intertwined with phonics and fluency. Children learn to read at their own pace and in their own time. As a second grade teacher and a tutor for the last ten years, I have developed creative and interesting lessons for students to explore and find their passion in reading.

Spelling,

Spelling

I love spelling! It is like a puzzle learning new strategies and letter features and blends to combine words. Children should learn spelling through whichever strategy works best for them whether it be singsong, rote memorization, art, movement or learning letter patterns and finding the fit like a puzzle.
