About John

Is math and science hard for you? I'd like to help!

I've been a practicing scientist for over 30 years, working as a chemist in the pharmaceutical industry doing "drug discovery". That's using organic chemistry to discover new substances that could become medicines.

Science and math have always fascinated me, and I love to share them and explain them to other people. There are few things more satisfying to me than seeing that "aha!" moment when a student really understands a problem.

My goal is to work with my students to help them to develop that "aha!" sort of understanding, and not just to learn by rote, so that when they see a problem with a twist they'll still be able to solve it with confidence. I patiently work with my students to make complex concepts easy for them to understand. Doing so helps them develop the skills they need to solve problems and be successful long after our tutoring times are over.

I've taught students in a wide variety of situations, everything from helping middle school students prepare for competition in Science Olympiad to teaching interns the safe laboratory practice and chemistry understanding they need to be successful researchers. I'm sure I can help you, too.

Science and math are important for today's well-informed citizens to understand, and they're important for success in modern careers. They can be fun, too! If you're struggling, let me help you out!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Organic Chemistry

I have been trained as an organic chemist in my PhD work at the University of California Berkeley, and have been practicing as an organic / medicinal chemist for 30 years. I really enjoy working with students to help them understand math and the sciences, and have taught several college level classes in organic and medicinal chemistry. I'm currently tutoring a student independently in AP Calculus.

Great Tutor

My first session was great. John made me feel more comfortable with getting help, which for me is always hard, and also made it easier for me understand what he was actually teaching me. Honestly, I feel much better about getting a tutor now that we had a chance to meet and were able to get comfortable with each other.
