About Lisa

I am a professional educator with 15 years of teaching experience in elementary and middle school. I tutor students in grades 2-8 in language arts and grades 2-4 in math. My specialty is writing and I use the Six Plus One Traits method to help students improve their writing skills.

I also have a background in counseling and I am familiar IEP's. I am happy to work with students who have academic, social or emotional challenges. Through my counseling and teaching background, I connect with the whole child. I have success with helping my students learn and improve because I build strong relationships with them and I never give up on a student.

My hours are flexible. I work some evenings and Saturdays. In order to see results, it is important to meet consistently for a specified period of time, depending on the needs of the student. Feel free to contact me to set up an appointment today.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a credentialed teacher for grades preschool through adult in the state if California. I have 15 years of teaching experience in grades 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8. I also posses a supplemental credential in English-Language Arts.

Handwriting

I have taught printing and cursive writing to children for many years. I believe that it is important for children to learn correct pencil grip and letter formation. For older children, I am a proponent of teaching cursive for proper brain development. Handwriting is more than correct formation, though. Neat handwriting is an important aspect of presentation of students' work.

Phonics

As a third grade teacher for eight years, I taught phonics on a regular basis. I am familiar with phonics rules and how to explain them to children. I am a firm believer in the importance of phonics as an essential component of a good reading program.
