About Deana

Hi, I’m Deana. I look forward to working together. There is nothing I love more than helping students find their writing voice. I have over 20 years of experience working as a teacher, literacy specialist, and a reading and writing tutor/coach for children and adults. I can help you succeed as a writer, too. I am particularly focused on two areas: college application essays, and coaching adults who want to build or hone their writing skills for work or life.

College application essays are a breed apart from school essays. Your application essay can distinguish you from other applicants, by showing admissions officers who you are. I will help you find ideas and tell your unique story in a style that feels like you.

Adults have many reasons for writing, using formal, technical or casual English. Together we will identify aspects of personal or professional writing you’d like to improve and collaborate to identify effective examples and strategies for success. Whether you are writing a love letter, an email or a blog, or you want to publish in a professional journal or present at a conference, I am committed to providing instruction and encouragement you need to succeed.

I have a Master’s in Education, and a CAGS in Teaching Reading, K-12. I have taught graduate level writing courses for teachers through the Boston Writing Project, UMass, Boston, and Cambridge College, and have worked as an on-line writing coach for the National Writing Project. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

I’ve been teaching reading and writing to students, K-Adult for over 20 years. I have taught narrative, opinion/argument and informational writing to Elementary students, personal essays and informational writing to educators, and professional emails, business reports, and professional standards documents to non-profit employees. I have published personal essays and poetry of my own.

I am certified in Orton-Gillingham at Mass General Hospital and trained in Telian Lively Letters, Lindamood Bell LiPs and Visualizing and Verbalizing and Wilson Fundations. I have a MA license in teaching reading and was an elementary literacy specialist for 13 years.

What sets me apart as a tutor is that I have the diagnostic abilities to meet you where you are and provide you with the skills, strategies, and confidence you need to succeed in writing. I can help you with generating ideas, organizing and structuring your writing, elaborating and using craft techniques tailored your audience and purpose. I have decades of experience working with English Learners, as well as students with dyslexia and other reading, writing, and language-based disabilities. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
