About Andrew

I am an experienced tutor in math, chemistry, and physics currently working for the Newton Public Schools. I am currently licensed to teach mathematics at the high school and middle school levels, and expect to obtain my certification to teach chemistry later this year. In addition to my experience teaching at the high school level, I also have prior experience teaching at the college level - first as a TA in graduate school in Colorado and later as a TA at Harvard. In both cases I taught classes in physics and chemistry and helped students with their homework assignments. In addition to my background in math and science, I am also highly knowledgeable in economics, history, grammar, and vocabulary. I have scored in the 99th percentile on standardized tests (all sections) and have many helpful test preparation strategies to share with those planning to take the SAT and GRE exams.

My schedule is very flexible, and I'm available most weekends and some weekday afternoons and evenings. My style of teaching and tutoring is structured but also friendly and conversational - I want to make sure you don't just memorize everything but that you actually understand the larger concepts. A key factor in achieving this is motivation - before you can learn anything, you have to *want* to learn. In this regard, I'm pretty good at making even the driest subject matter interesting, whether by relating it to real-world problems, showing how it is relevant to daily life, or sometimes simply by illustrating the value of knowledge for its own sake.

So, give me a try - I think you'll be happy with the results!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is like second nature to me. I have a thorough understanding of all the fundamental concepts, and I am confident that I can explain the subject in such a way that you too will soon find it an easy subject to master!

Algebra 2

Algebra is like second nature to me. I have a thorough understanding of all the fundamental concepts, and I am confident that I can explain the subject in such a way that you too will soon find it an easy subject to master!

Calculus

Calculus is a highly practical branch of mathematics with many applications in the natural sciences, economics, and engineering. The good news is that it's not as difficult as it may seem - at least not basic single-variable calculus. I can help you overcome any obstacles you may have with respect to differentiation, integration, and any of their numerous applications. I can also help with related problems of limits, infinite series, and numerical methods for solving basic calculus problems.

CFA

I successfully passed Level I of the CFA Exam in June, 2012 and passed Level II of the CFA Exam in June, 2013, each on the first try. Each CFA exam covers an incredible amount of material - I have some basic strategies to offer that will help organize your preparation and maximize your test scores.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience tutoring children in elementary math and am certified to teach mathematics in Massachusetts grades 5-8. I also have experience tutoring children in basic reading, writing, spelling, and handwriting skills.

Physics

I have a very strong background in physics and have successfully tutored several students in the subject as well, ranging from introductory high school physics up through AP Physics and first-year college physics, including both classical mechanics and electricity & magnetism.

SAT Math

I scored a perfect 800 on the math portion of the SAT, and routinely score 800 on the math section whenever I take the practice exams. Even if you aren't shooting for 800, the SAT math exam is definitely one where you can markedly improve your score with even just a limited amount of studying and practice. Fortunately, the SAT math exam covers a specific, well-defined set of topics, and tends to ask the same types of questions in the same way year after year. I will help you with the topics that you find the most difficult, and I have some basic strategies to offer that will help you effectively organize your preparation and maximize your test scores.

SAT Reading

The SAT reading exam tests your knowledge of vocabulary and reading comprehension. Although I'm not a perfect scorer on this exam, I did get a 710 when I took the exam years ago, and consistently score in the 750-780 range on the reading section whenever I take the practice exams nowadays. I have some basic strategies to offer that will help you effectively organize your preparation and maximize your test scores.

Instructions Worth Their Weight in Gold — Andrew came to my rescue during the last 2 weeks of my 3 college summer courses. I was struggling to keep up with the deadline and decided I needed help. The first meeting with Andrew assured me that he was going to be a good for and give me a great chance of passing the courses. Needless to say, he knew all of the material from physics, pre-calculus, and even chemistry. As a result, I passed all ...
