Rather than travel to the site where tutoring is needed, I prefer methods that are more efficient and more productive: Answering questions sent to me by email or cell phone, visiting the student's computer remotely by using the GoToAssist service, and by emailing some files containing macros that I think will benefit the client.
I developed a spreadsheet that is now known as the Forecaster.xls Purchase Order Generator.
It generates purchase orders that are balanced so that the department tends to run low on everything at once. Side effects are typically that inventory is reduced by 25 percent while driving stockouts to nearly zero.
As I developed one app after another, I accumulated a growing library of VBA macros that I port from one app to the next, to speed development. Using it, I have developed an introductory one-size-fits-all app named AppTemplate.xls. It provides macros that perform automatically many useful chores that otherwise would be done manually or not at all. Building a database in Excel is now almost as easy as operating a typewriter. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I warn prospective students that they will learn Excel best if they ask me to help them write a specific program in which they have an interest. Just reading a book on Excel won't work; so says John Walkenbach, author of "Microsoft Excel 2010 Power Programming with VBA" (Wiley, $50).
Most employers are NOT looking for Excel users who know how to write VBA MACROS. Learn the =Sum() formula and move on to learn a little of PowerPoint and Word. That is what you need to be a Secretary (Administrative Assistant) who is in high demand via the temporary employment agencies. Excel is used much more than Access is. Skip Access and clones like ALPHA5 version eleven.
