About Beverly

With an undergraduate degree in Education and a master's degree in Training & Development, my career has always been focused on guiding others to successfully achieve their learning goals. Throughout my work history, attention to detail has been essential -- regardless of title and/or job responsibilities. I am now semi-retired and continue to support the marketing division of an Employees' Credit Union proofreading ad hoc seasonal as well as quarterly customer-facing newsletters, mailers and brochures. This work also involves light line-editing while providing suggestions for content re-organization.

I started my career in traditional publishing as a Production Editor and then migrated to software publishing where I worked in Graphic Design as an Account Manager, and later I managed a technical training program for software developers. From there, I became a Training and Communications consultant supporting various high tech organizations and divisions. Moving on from high tech, I started writing end-user instructions and quick start guides for household products, in collaboration with graphic designers and product managers for a variety of consumer products. For the past nine years, I have written end-user documentation in collaboration with cardiology product specialists for several stress-testing devices. This involved working with subject-matter experts to review and analyze the functionality of successive product builds to create instructions for use, installation and configuration guides, as well as hardware and software servicing guidelines.

My professional writing career began over forty years ago where attention to detail was a given regardless of subject, focus or intent -- from the most basic email correspondence to the global messages of a divisional Senior Vice President. From the start, I was expected not only to have excellent writing skills, but the ability to edit and proofread my own work which was often disseminated to a global audience. But it was my boot camp training in traditional publishing that gave me the foundational skills -- where Zero Error was the standard when 150,000-book print runs were at stake. In that regard, nothing could go wrong!

Throughout my career, I have been a mentor to those who wanted to improve their writing and editing skills. To this day, I am still asked to help college students and recent graduates sharpen their writing skills, whether they are creating a cover letter and/or resume, or completing a time-sensitive writing assignment. (And this included my own children!). But most importantly, it is the final act of proofreading that seals your fate. Taking the time to step away and then re-read your own writing is essential. I know. I am doing that right now as I fill out this profile.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading

I have spent over forty years in the corporate setting as a professional writer. Regardless of title or job responsibilities, I was required to proofread my own work before submission either to the stakeholders in a division or to a global audience. I am currently proofreading and editing various marketing materials, newsletters and brochures for an Employees Credit Union. Prior to that, I wrote their customer-facing procedures that had to be tested by senior-level management before the documents were uploaded to an online repository for Member Services employees.

Writing

When I began my career in traditional publishing, I discovered my passion for writing -- professionally in a corporate setting and personally when I started writing weekly food columns and restaurant reviews. Early in my career, I also discovered my talent for writing fiction which I continue to pursue in my retirement. It is this combined approach that has enabled me to mentor others when it comes to putting words on paper (or on a computer screen). From personal experience, I understand the many roadblocks to success and I also understand how to circumnavigate the internal challenges that can impede self-expression.
