About Kathryn

Hello. My name is Kathy and I have been teaching and tutoring for twenty years. I am licensed in Massachusetts for grades 1-6 in all subjects. I have a Masters in Education as well as a Bachelors Degree in English Literature.

The majority of my teaching has been with students performing below their grade level. I identify the student's learning abilities and weaknesses to design and implement lessons that the student can understand and attain successful results. My students have responded to my tutorials with enthusiasm and determination to learn.

During my years of teaching I have taught grades four through twelve. I have taught in both private and public schools. For seven years I taught high school boys in the Department of Youth educational facility. While there I co-wrote the Life Skills Curriculum which is now used in all DYS educational facilities. Currently, I am tutoring high school students in the Academic Support Program at a local private school.

I respect my students, taking the time to learn their strengths and weaknesses. My goal is to provide the most applicable and relevant lesson plans for each student.

My students' successes have been higher than expected by my superiors.

Please consider as the tutor for your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am licensed in Massachusetts for grades 1-6 in all subjects. I have taught for 20 years from grades four through twelve. Also, I have tutored students in grades five through twelve in mathematics, reading and writing skills and test preparation.

I have taught "at-risk" high school students for eight years. Many of these students were below academic grade level. My students reached a higher rate of success than expected by the directors and principals of the schools.

I have a Master's in Education as well as a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature. I know I am a highly qualified teacher and tutor.

Elementary Math

I hold a Bachelors Degree in English Literature and a Masters in Education from Lesley University. I have taught mathematics to students in grades five through ten including tutoring in mathematics and reading/writing skills. During my years of teaching I have led the Teachers Weekly Meetings in which all students academic goals were defined and implemented the specific lessons for each student. This included all subject areas. I reviewed the students' progress and, when needed, made modifications in their lessons. As part of my position I wrote I.E.P.s and behavioral goals when necessary.

As a teacher of "at-risk" middle and high school students I taught Handwriting as part of the Life Skills Curriculum. This was taught each quarter twice a week (one and a half hours each). The majority of the students, ages 11 through 18, had not been required to learn handwriting skills. I designed the lesson plans first using the lined handwriting paper and copies of the alphabet (lower and upper case letters). Using the chalkboard I drew out the lines and wrote, starting with simple words such as the date, the name of the school and moved on to my name. Then each student wrote on the board. Next they wrote the date, their name and a few simple sentences about a subject of their choice. The final project was an essay assigned from one of their classes which had to be written in cursive.
The students were focused and enthused. Their final project conveyed not only success but pride in their work.

I have a Bachelors Degree in English Literature and a Masters in Education from Lesley University. For twenty years I have taught grades five through twelve in English, Science and Mathematics. I have ten years of tutoring in test preparation (SAT, MCAS and GED).

While teaching Special Needs students at the middle school level at a facility for students with learning difficulties I administered the phonic tests. For students requiring work in this area I worked with each individually.

The lessons included learning "sight words" (common words for that grade level), writing and reading flash cards, reading short passages and intermittently re-testing each student.

I tutored the students in phonics for approximately ten years, grades one through eight.

As a teacher of English in both the elementary and secondary level I am qualified to proofread students' writings.

Public Speaking

As part of my position as a teacher at the Collaborative for Educational Services I lead the Weekly Learning Team Meetings. The goal of these meetings were to discuss each students' academic goals and implement the appropriate lesson plans.

As a Science teacher my lessons were project-based. Each student chose a project from a short list and worked on his or her project at school. The lesson's finale was a presentation of their project to the class and, at times, to the entire middle school. o do this they were given lessons, as well as graded on, presentation, knowledge of the subject, eye contact, appropriate vocabulary, speech and the ability to respond to questions.

As part of my curriculum as an English Teacher I taught Public Speaking. My students would read an essay, a story, a poem to the class as well as participate in a public discussion.

As a past member of the PTO and the Recreation Committee I presented ideas for programs and participated in, and lead, group discussions.

Lastly, I have acted in the local theatre group. I feel I am qualified to teach/tutor students in Public Speaking.

I have tutored for many years, specifically in basic math, reading and writing skills. I have passed WyzAnt's Reading test.

SAT Reading

As a high school teacher I prepared the students for their SAT tests as well as MCAS and GED tests.
My Bachelors Degree is in English Literature and I received my Masters in Education from Lesley University in 2007.

Special Needs

For twelve years I taught students with Special Needs, beginning with a fifth grader for one year. During his sixth grade year I taught him and three other students two periods a day as well as worked with each in their regular classes.

I taught English and Mathematics for three years at an alternative high school which included working with a student diagnosed with schizophrenia.

For eight years I taught at a DYS facility (Science and Mathematics) to high school boys, most of whom were Special Needs students. I also tutored there, one-on-one, with those that were behind grade level. As part of my position, I wrote Independent Educational Plans and Behavioral Education Plans for students whose academic needs required detailed data and goals. I also lead the Weekly Teachers Meeting in which each students' goals were determined and, if necessary, modified.

I have many certifications including "Teaching the Difficult Learner", "Science for Short Term Students", "Mathematics for the Students with Special Needs".

Currently I am tutoring four students, one with special needs. I have professional and creative learning lessons as well as experience in differentiational teaching.

As a teacher for grades five through eight I taught Public Speaking. The students had two write three essays; a persuasive paper, an informational document and a scientific research paper. The students presented their essays to the class and the principal. They were graded on research, documentation and their ability to speak well, clearly present the information and answer questions by their classmates and principal.

As a high school teacher for eight years I taught proper speech and Public Speaking through mock job interviews, character representations of famous people (scientists, politicians and historians). The students were graded on their ability to speak clearly and have their presentations understood by the teacher and the class.

Study Skills

During my years of teaching I taught Study Skills to students in grades five through eight at a school in Newburyport. I also taught Study Skills and Test Taking Strategies to High School Students at the DYS education facilities in West Peabody and Middleton.

I created lesson plans geared to each students' abilities resulting in a high level of success.

For two years I worked as a freelance writer for several local newspapers, including the Ipswich Chronicle. Also, as a student at college I worked with my English professor proofreading essays and research papers.
