About Rose

Every student has a different learning style, different methods that help them to study and understand, different passions, strengths, and even life stories, all of which can make a difference to a student's writing and reading experience and knowledge. Through my many years of education, tutoring, and general work with students of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences, I know that being positive and flexible are the keys to teaching and helping students learn the skills that they need to improve and succeed.

For my entire life, helping others has been one of my passions and although I have been working towards my personal goal of a classroom teacher (and am licensed to teach English in grades 6-12), my yearning to help students one to one and in small groups, outside of school is a driving force.

My specialty is in English writing and reading. Working with students to brainstorm, write papers, and understand texts they are given are all things that I gained a lot of experience doing while working as a tutor at the Umass Dartmouth WRC. Since graduation, I have continued to build on that experience by tutoring other students over the years.

I prefer to meet with a student before official lessons begin. This meeting is our interview where we can present each other with questions, get to know each other, and figure out if I am the right fit for your tutoring needs.

I prefer to receive a 24 hour cancellation notice and am willing to negotiate a replacement lesson time/day in order to make up for lost time.

I am willing to work with you to find a quiet atmosphere in which to study and focus that is mutual distance between our work/school locations, and I prefer to work in quiet libraries, or if necessary, coffee shops.

I look forward to meeting and working with you to help you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am highly qualified as an English tutor because I not only have a degree in English Literature from Umass Dartmouth but I have experience as a tutor already. While studying for my degree I was a tutor at the university and I have learned a variety of skills and methods to assist students in learning. Additionally, I have recently passed the MTELs and am a qualified English Teacher for grades 6-12 in the state of MA.

Literature

I graduated from Umass Dartmouth with a BA in English Literature after 4 years of Literature related studies. During that program I learned about many different authors and many different schools of analysis that could be applied to literature. Today, books and literature, both classical and modern, and how they relate to the culture and history of the world continue to be fascinating to me and I love sharing that fascination with others.

Reading

I have been a reader my entire life and sharing my love of reading is important to me. It's even more important to me now because my love of reading, added to my BA in English Literature, and my teaching license, qualify me to share that love more extensively. It's important that readers learn to understand what they read and be able to express that understanding and my tutoring experiences make me qualified to help.

Vocabulary

Extensive reading is usually the key to a great vocabulary and while I was in school studying for my English Literature degree, I did almost nothing else, however vocabulary isn't about the amount of words you know, Vocabulary is more about how effectively you can use your words and adapt to new ones. I have spent many school years learning how to improve my vocabulary and how to use both context clues and breaking down parts of a word, to figure out its meaning and sharing the tools I have learned will be a very exciting process.

Writing

I have been writing for fun and for academic purposes for as long as I have been able to read and it has always provided me with great enjoyment. When I was tutoring at Umass Dartmouth, I was able to discover and utilize skills both new and old for brainstorming essays and for working through every step of the writing process and I was even able to apply those steps personally when I wrote my Honors Thesis during my senior year. I understand how long and difficult the process of writing can be but I know that with time and the proper tools, any writing assignment can be done well and efficiently.
