About Claudia

I have a strong background in the bilingual field and the skills involved in the language learning acquisition and production both verbally and in writing. Throughout my entire life as a teacher and as a Language professional, I have been directly involved in writing, reading, listening, translating, proofreading and editing texts in both Spanish and English. During my college career in Colombia, South America, I developed and refined my English skills by completing a demanding course load emphasized on writing of essays, compositions and literary critiques and followed by tests to assess my English proficiency like the Michigan and the TOEFL. Concurrently, my Spanish skills were polished through the continuous study and practice of the language in a linguistic approach by analyzing the language and its value in the context of its phonetics, phonology, semantics, syntax, morphology and similar disciplines and by creating literary writing reflecting the values of such disciplines in the language.

Finally, my experience in the bilingual field continued its course throughout my Graduate career at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and my position as a High School Spanish teacher by focusing in the proficiency of both languages through creative writing and analysis of literary material, by translating and understanding authentic Spanish texts and by using grammar, phonetics and other tools in improving the finalized text. Additionally, as part of the requirement to be a State Licensed Teacher, I was assessed in both English and Spanish Literacy skills though tests like the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) and the Praxis test with optimum results.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Teaching Foreign Languages: English (ESL) and French from Universidad Industrial de Santander, Bucaramanga, Colombia, South America. I also have a Master of Arts in Teaching with emphasis in Spanish from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. All my studies are related to the learning, acquisition and teaching of languages in the context of culture.

Handwriting

As a teacher who attended a secondary education Catholic school, I was trained in calligraphy and penmanship by nuns who persisted in keeping an organized and neat handwriting as a way to keep your soul and spirit free of clutter as well. These habits have lived with me for my entire life and even today as a teacher, I encourage my students to express their spotless souls through their penmanship.
