About Sarah

As a veteran of the publishing industry. I wrote and edited for magazines and newspapers.

My tutoring credentials go back to my days as an undergraduate when I was a peer tutor in English Literature and also a writing coach. After college, I tutored Columbia and Yale students with strengthening college-level writing, reading, and time-management.

I have an M.S. in Organizational Change Management, concentrating on economics and qualitative analysis.

I strive to create a feeling of mutual respect, support and trust with students.

I teach to a student's strengths and minimize their weaknesses.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

The student who wants to succeed in any industry or professional pursuit must be a sophisticated reader. The ACT Reading portion is a solid gauge of the test taker's ability to digest a passage of writing and then correctly infer and/or choose the central theme of that writing. My own experience as a writer and editor - and test taker will guide a student to personalize strategies and methods such as using the answers as a guide to answering the questions, and eliminating the obvious incorrect answers.

ESL/ESOL

As an ESL teacher and tutor, I devise effective personalized lesson plans tailored to student’s age, gender, and culture. To that end, I use realia, objects from real life to improve students' understanding of other cultures and real life situations.

For my adult students, we practice role-playing everyday situations, e.g., asking for help at a clothing store or introducing themselves to their child's teacher.

Teaching English as a Second Language fosters and promotes integrity and international goodwill. I want to be part of that.

Film

Aside from tutoring and teaching English I am a screenwriter. I've worked on the production side of filmmaking in a variety of roles. As a college junior, I designed an independent course on the films of British director David Lean. I would love the chance to teach a student how to attain a sophisticated eye and a new appreciation for films.

Handwriting

I’ve worked with English Language Arts students in elementary, middle school, and high school level students whose grades have been jeopardized by poor handwriting. To that end, I teach basic form and slant, letter size, spacing according - and the Power Grip! My students and I have practiced writing classic poetry and paragraphs from grade-level books.

Public Speaking

As an undergraduate and graduate, I was a representative of my schools in student social endeavors. As an adult, I joined Toastmasters to improve my public speaking in professional settings. As a recruiter of student journalists for The New York Times, I acted as moderator for panels on careers in journalism.

SAT Reading

SAT Reading, Critical Thinking, Vocabulary and Essay Writing

TOEFL

My subject qualifications are standardized test preparation; ESL; TOEFL; Time Management; English Comprehension; Writing; Speaking.

Vocabulary

I have 20 years experience as an editor in the magazine and newspaper industries. During that time, I edited pieces of writing, replacing and rearranging words in order to make stories and articles come alive. As an undergraduate, I was a peer tutor and coach for my classmates who struggled with writing. While working, I took freelance assignments mentoring students at Columbia and Yale with English Literature and their essays and papers.
