About Laurie

How about practicing reading while playing a card game? Or, learning about space or horses or future jobs to go over syllable types and figure out long words?

Everyone has the ability to be a skilled and motivated reader.

Expert instruction and practice with fun and interest built-in are the ways to make it happen. The more enjoyable and engaging the practice is, the easier it is to learn.

15 years of experience as a Reading Specialist and 12 years as a classroom teacher have taught me how to plan lessons around students' interests. For example, reading comprehension lessons might involve figuring out the directions to a game or a magic trick. Phonics practice always can involve a game or puzzle.

I am certified in Wilson and have loads of experience with Fundations and other programs. My instruction is based on assessments that give me answers about students' strengths and challenges.

I love working one on one with kids of all ages and building confidence in their own powers of learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I am Level I certified in the Wilson Reading System. I have taught the Fundations Program to kindergartners through high school students. I have designed individual phonics curricula for older students who have gaps in their phonics knowledge and used phonemic awareness materials for students who are not yet ready to dive in to phonics, but need the foundations that will prepare them for reading readiness.
