I am an experienced/certified Math Specialist for grades 1-7 . I worked with children who were either needing more of a challenge or those who were struggling with Math in Lincoln, Ma for 10 years. Over the last 3 years, I have been a classroom teacher in grades 1, 2, and 3 in Peabody and Haverhill. I love to see a child eyes light up when they suddenly "get it" after having struggled with a concept. I feel like the best way to work with children is to make it meaningful to them. Once they see the value of what they are learning, their motivation kicks in and they become active learners instead of passive receivers of information! This is where my strengths are as a tutor, as well as a classroom teacher.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience tutoring ESL, Math and Reading to all ages of children and adults. In Math I have 10 years working in Lincoln Ma. as a Mathematics Specialist for grades 1-7. I also have experience teaching and tutoring English to both foreign exchange students as well as students who moved here from other countries.
I taught first grade for 3 years. A large part of the curriculum in first grade is based on phonics. Phonics is an important part of any reading program as it teaches children how to sound out words. The phonics "rules" are specific and need to be taught. Peabody used the Journeys reading curriculum, which is what I became familiar with. I feel I am knowledgeable about tutoring Phonics, because I taught it for 3 years.
I have taught and tutored study skills as it relates to taking the MCAS test given in public elementary and middle schools. As a classroom teacher I taught children study skills as it relates to using time management skills, planning ahead and staying organized.
I am an avid tennis player. I have and still do teach my own children how to play. When I was a child, I was on the Varsity tennis team in high school and went to tennis camp for 3 summers. It would be fun to get some students who would like to become better at tennis.
I am taking a certification class in Child Yoga through Child Light Yoga.
When I am finished (9/30/13), I will be qualified to teach group and individual yoga. As a classroom teacher, I did yoga with the kids everyday. They seemed to love it and it helped them re-focus and not get "antsy" through the morning work cycle.
