Ithaca College (English 7-12)
Southern Illnois University (Master's)
I earned a B.A. in English/Education 7-12 at Ithaca College, while minoring in Writing and Theater. I got a Masters in English Rhetoric. But my degrees are nothing compared to the practical experience I got from teaching at Ithaca Montessori, Ithaca High School, Nothern Essex Community and SNHU. My students have always been my partners in learning - I believe in collaboration, strengthening voices, self-discovery and expressing yourself in the best, most effective way through writing.
At grad school, I taught Composition and Intro. to Fiction classes. I began teaching at NECCO and SNHU after my oldest son started school and there I taught Composition I and II, Basic Reading, Basic Writing and Interpersonal Communication classes. I was struck by the sheer number of students who struggled with writing a thesis statement, let alone a five paragraph essay. When my first son, now a junior in high school, struggled with writing his essays, I saw a need that wasn't being filled. Effective essay writing is not just a benchmark for good grades, high SAT scores, and successful college applications. Effective essay writing is at the heart of expressing YOU and discovering what you believe in at every stage of your education in and out of school.
I left teaching 5 years ago to stay at home after my second son was born. To keep my head in the game, I started working as freelance book editor and writer. But I long to teach again now that my youngest has started school.
What I discovered in my most recent teaching positions, is that too many people lack confidence and skill-sets that would build their confidence. I believe we are ALL capable of making an impact in our own lives and in the lives of others through writing. And I am eager to help you begin making that impact.

Too many people lack writing confidence because they lack the skill-sets that would build that confidence. I can teach you the skill-sets you need to be an effective writer in all areas of your life - school, work or personal. Let me help you begin making a powerful difference in how you express yourself. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
At college I majored in English with a Teaching Concentration. I minored in Theater, took coursework in Acting and Oral Interpretation of Literature and supervised a school play at Ithaca Montessori during my practice teaching semester.
While studying English and Rhetoric in Grad School, I worked as a graduate assistant and taught an Intro to Fiction class that included a public speaking component.
I most recently taught Interpersonal Communication courses for NECCO which included public speaking assignments. I also regularly preside over Church services as guest speaker.
