I am a retired engineer, with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. I have three young grandchildren, currently in grades 1,3, and 7. I have spent significant time over the past 7 years helping each of them with their schoolwork on a daily basis. I enjoy helping them develop academically, and can see the impact that some after-school reinforcement of material covered in the classroom can have on a student's comprehension. I believe that children learn at different rates, and that the difference between achievement levels is often little more than some extra individualized instruction coupled with supervised repetition of new concepts until the student's understanding has been demonstrated. Each of my tutoring sessions typically include both.
Given my own academic and professional background, I feel I am particularly suited to math subjects, but am completely comfortable in any grammar-level subject matter. During the past seven years, I have provided instruction in all grammar school subjects, from entry-level phonetics, reading, grammar, basic arithmetic concepts, etc, to the typical middle-school subjects such as language arts, math, social studies, and science. I use traditional methods such as hands-on instruction, but also make use of many computer-based interactive teaching tools.
I generally begin with support for homework assignments, but often structure targeted approaches to areas that parents or teachers have identified as needing emphasis. I will recommend initial meetings with teachers and parents, at my expense, to discuss tutoring subjects and develop the most responsive approach to each student's needs. I will also prefer to have follow-up meetings with teachers and parents to assess progress and adjust activities if appropriate.
Being a retiree, I have considerable scheduling flexibility. As such, I don't have any cancellation restrictions.
To ensure a suitable teaching environment, I have space available in my home. There is also community space at my residence that is quiet and relaxed. My local library is also a possible venue. I can certainly travel to client-designated locations as well. I am a retired engineer, with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
