About Keith

I'm a software designer who's developed novel and effective ways to teach Algebra and Calculus to students of a wide-range of abilities. With a little guidance and a lot of hard work, a student can improve fundamental skills dramatically in just a few short weeks. Many of the methods I employ I once used to dramatically improve my own skills in Algebra and Calculus with very successful results in high school. I have also used these skills everyday in important situations such as measuring the efficacy of medicines to determining the odds of car accidents in heavy traffic.

My teaching philosophy stresses fundamentals and practical examples. I like to assign lots of simple problems for a wide-range of math topics and give solutions, and then build the student up to a level where he/she can solve complex problems for many topics by breaking them down to a bunch of simple problems. This is in contrast to most teachers' methods that mix complicated problems with simple problems for a single topic and then move on to the next topic. I find that my method helps the student retain information as well as being the most effective method for teaching the student to derive solutions to problems. Furthermore, it is easily tailored to a wide variety of learning styles. Students who struggle, even receive failing grades, in a conventional setting will find my methods considerably effective as long as they're willing to work hard. I have passed the certification test to teach high school Mathematics in Massachusetts.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

AutoCAD

As a 3d-printing enthusiast for many years, I have learned to become incredibly familiar with AutoCAD, and its every nuance. In several of my projects involving non-destructive testing, AutoCAD was critical every step of the way. I have become particularly skilled at determining the correct sequence of steps for certain desired effects such as whether to trim before altering layer properties when analyzing a truss.

Classics

Although I am an amateur classicist, I have completed over 30 hours in Classical Latin and Ancient Greek. Additionally, I earned a perfect score on the National Latin Exam in High School and also earned very high marks on the National Greek Exam. Currently, I am putting my mathematics and cryptographic background to good use and am analyzing The Iliad and The Odyssey. and so far the evidence suggests that the same author wrote both poems.

Computer Engineering

I have a degree in Computer Engineering. Such a degree means that I have written parts of operating systems, dealt with memory management, compiler design, encryption, and server interfaces. Additionally, I have worked extensively in Verilog and VHDL to write CPU's to FPGA's.

Computer Programming

As a computer engineer, I program daily. I program in several different languages including Java, Ruby, C, and Lisp. Furthermore, I learned how to program several languages as an adult, which is unusual, but gives me special insight into teaching the subject.

I've TA'd before at my university, and gained a lot of insights into tutoring adults. I think I could be a real asset as a computer programming tutor.

Computer Science

With a degree in Computer Engineering, I have taken many computer science classes. I have a sound grasp of Data Structures, Complexity Theory, and other topics relevant to a standard Computer Science curriculum. Additionally, I have researched algorithm development, which is another extremely relevant aspect of Computer Science.

Differential Equations

I completed a Differential Equations course with high marks. Differential Equations is largely a continuation of the calculus that is taught to students during the year of undergraduate work. The most complicated topics are Laplace transforms, use of Eigenvalue calculation, and Fourier transforms. From the work that I've done in software, I am very good at explaining that to people.

Electrical Engineering

I have a degree in Computer Engineering, which entails extensive study of most Electrical Engineering topics. I am quite strong in Circuit Theory, Discrete and Continuous Time Linear Systems, Random Signals and Noise, Computer Hardware Design, FPGA work, and Embedded Systems.

Finite Math

I studied lots of finite math in college and I earned high marks for the class specifically called "Discrete Mathematics," which is usually considered to be the same thing as Finite Math. I also earned high marks in the classes that are considered parts of a finite mathematics class such as probability theory and abstract algebra. I use finite math whenever I'm working on Computer Science problems and I'm always studying its broad topics and finer points. Even though the term "Finite Math" covers a huge range of topics, I have learned to use some strategies to efficiently study this wide-range of subjects.

General Computer

I have worked on several operating systems, so I know all of the computers' secrets.

Linux

I use Linux based systems and shells every day. My favorite distribution is Gentoo, but I also use Redhat and Ubuntu. I placed 21st out of thousands of competitors in the MA. Cyberaces Challenge, a contest that largely involved Linux use. I've worked on Bash and SSH a lot.

MATLAB

As an individual who is extremely familiar with MATLAB, I am prepared to provide tutoring for MATLAB scripting that is necessary more many undergraduate and graduate students. Specifically, I am quite familiar with the data analysis aspects of MATLAB as well as the GUI interface nuances of the programming language.

MTLE

I have taken the MTLE Math and successfully passed it with flying colors. I successfully tutored for the MTLE in the past. I have also tutored successfully for the subjects covered on the test before. I would be glad to submit proof of completion if you'd like.

Oracle

As an Oracle-certified Associate who is working towards Oracle Master certification, I am quite familiar with Oracle database administration. I have strong and tested SQL skills from numerous database projects and actively apply my expertise to Big Data Analytics. Additionally, I have unique insights into Oracle software from my work in Operating System design.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken Organic Chemistry in college. I received high marks in the subject. I have continued to study lots of chemical software that uses lots of organic chemistry.

Physics

I'm an engineer who uses Physics everyday. I've done legitimate research in the field relating to consequences of prospective derivations of the fine-structure constant, and I've also tutored for AP Physics at the high school level.

Praxis

As a certified teacher, I have lots of experience with the Praxis test and the topics covered on the exam. I know the tricky topics, ideal preparation strategies, and the proper test-taking procedures of the exam. Additionally, I can increase one's abstract thinking ability relatively quickly in a very efficient manner.

Python

As a computer engineer, I have programmed in Python often. I have an extremely strong grasp of the language, as well as a strong grasp of how it applies to servers, and can serve as a substitute for Bash in Linux systems. As with any programming language, the key is practice: lots of practice. I try to break abstract examples down into tons of simple problems to get the pupil to understand.

QuickBooks

I have a lot of experience using QuickBooks software when I have had to analyze finances for a small business. I used the software a great deal when I was working as a logistics coordinator. I would use a pretty straightforward method to teach it by constructing examples and questions of gradually increasing difficulty. It doesn't take long to learn the basics of the software.

SAS

I am a SAS-certified Advanced Programmer for SAS 9. I use SAS for most of my multivariate analyses, complex clustering problems, and other Big Data Analytic issues. I have written literally hundreds of SAS projects.

Web Design

I have studied classes in HTML, Javascript, and Computer Networking. I worked part-time as a web-designer for several small-businesses. Many of those businesses saw increased success specifically because of my web-design. I also have written to IETF on the RFC. I have taught children the basics of Web-Design with Cybercamps in the summer as a counselor. Finally, I placed 21st in the Massachusetts Cyberaces challenge.

Writing

I'm an engineer by profession who used to be a professional technical writer. I have a lot of experience tutoring students to elite academic levels and preparing them for publication in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature, Journal of Applied Computing Machinery, etc.
